ORION TOWNSHIP — One can never tell where you might find tomorrow’s stars today. Perhaps it was on the softball diamond of Waldon Middle School Tuesday in near Lake Orion.

The Oakland edge showed some flashes of potential in a double-header sweep of the visiting Troy Rockets. On this night, the Edge was firing on all cylinders.

“I thought that we played pretty well,” said Oakland Edge coach Dale Carson, whose team took a 12-1, 13-6 sweep of the Rockets.

“We’ve played in some tournaments, and we’ve had some good games and not so good games. There are some really good teams out there,” added Carson. “We played a team where I think the one pitcher was throwing in the low 40s.”

This is not high school. This league, the Waterford Area Softball League, has various age brackets. These two teams played in the 10U Division, so many of these players had little or no experience heading into the season.

This Edge team pulls players from Lake Orion, Oxford, Romeo and Rochester. It apparently is ahead of the Rockets at this stage of the game, although the Edge has been on both sides of the spectrum.

“We’ve only been mercied one time,” said Carson. “We’ve had some close games. We haven’t won a lot of them. But we can see the improvement.”

Infielders Tessa Ness and Madison Collins have emerged as the leaders of this squad, with Collins posting a .465 batting average.

“We have good young kids and they are getting better all of the time,” said Carson. “I can see in five, six years that some of them might become some pretty good players once they get to high school.”
