In the second Baker contest, Athens made a late charge with three straight strikes. Oxford (2-0, 2-0) kept the Red Hawks at bay with a strike from Alyssa Hurdato in the eighth frame, a spare from Colleen Walters in the ninth frame and Lafnear tossed two strikes and a 9-count in the tenth to pull out a victory 150-145.

Game 2 of the Baker competition went right down to the 10th frame as well with Rein firing a strike to squeak out a 168-157 triumph.

In the head-to-head matches, the Wildcats (1-1, 1-1) picked up wins from Hurlburt (222), Guzanek (200) and Rein (205) in the first round.  In Game 2 of match play. Brandon Barber (186), Hurlburt (223) and Kyle Woody (241) all won matches, with Woody firing eight strikes in the first nine frames in his game.

“This was a nice day for the team,” said Oxford coach JR Lafnear. “We’ve had some real ups and downs so far this season. The kids are really working hard and today that work paid off.  We need to get more consistent but you can see improvement from our bowlers. I think they’re starting to become more sure of themselves and more confident.”

Oxford will bowl Troy High at Drakeshire Lanes on Jan. 10.
