Clarkston matmen sixth at Goodrich Tournament of Champions

GOODRICH — Clarkston finished a fine sixth out of 16 teams at the recent Tournament of Champions in Goodrich.

The field finished six ranked schools in the state’s four divisions and two nationally-ranked opponents.

Greenville’s Jordon Thomas and Clarkston’s Matt Vandermeer both ranked first in Division 2 and Division 1, respectively, battle din the finals in one of the day;s marquee matchups. Thomas has either pinned or technical fall all of his wins this year  and won by decision, 3-1.

Division 1 third-ranked Jeff Sloney finished second at 130, falling to nationally-ranked Joe Rendina of Dundee in the finals. Sloney upset defending D-4 state champ Jordan Bosma of Hesperia in the semifinals and defeated fellow D-1 ranked Logan Marcicki of Novi Detroit Catholic Central in the quarterfinals.

Clarkston also had six other placers on the day. Scott Devos (285) and Mike Henige (160) both finished fourth, while Cameron Wilke (119), Nick Vandermeer (135) and Ethan Frick (189) all finished sixth. Greg Miller (103) placed eighth.
