Birmingham schools favored in county waters

LAKE ORION — If there’s one common thread to the Oakland County Boys Swimming & Diving Championships in recent years, the meet surely has a definite Birmingham feel to it.

Only on a couple of occasions, has a tea m other than Birmingham Brother Rice, Birmingham Seaholm or Birmingham Groves finish in the top three at the prestigious meet, which kicks off the championship season in the sport.

“That seems to be the case. The Birmingham schools have dominated in recent years”, conceded Paul Fairman, Lake Orion’s head coach and meet manager at his year’s meet which will be held at Lake Orion’s Nadatorium.

Diving is Friday night, while swimming finals will begin at 12 p.m.

“I would like to think we have a shot at the top five. I think there’s a few of us that hope for that,” added Fairman. “Going in, Seaholm is probably the favorite.”

Brother Rice dominated throughout the 1990s and much of the 2000s with Seaholm and Groves winning at least one title in the past decade. Groves is the two-time defending champs, collecting 332 points last season with Seaholm (268.5) and Brother Rice (157) following suit.

Lake Orion finished fourth last season (143), followed by Novi (140.5), Clarkston (121), South Lyon Unified (118), Walled Lake Northern (112), Troy Athens (110.5) and Bloomfield Hills Lahser (1-04) in the top 10 team standings.

Last season 29 of the county’s 36 boys team reached the scoring column.

In the current coaches association state polls, there are eight county teams ranked in the top 10 in the state’s three divisions, plus an additional six schools listed as honorable mention.

In D-1, Brother Rice (No. 5) and Lake Orion (co-No. 10) and Novi Detroit Catholic Central (co-No. 10) are ranked, while Troy, South Lyon Unified and Clarkston are honorable mention.

In D-2, Seaholm (No. 1) and Groves (No. 2) occupy the top slots and are the favorites entering the county meet, while North Farmington is 10^th and Berkley honorable mention.

In D-3, Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood (No. 6) and Bloomfield Hills Lahser (No. 8) hold down a spot in the rankings, while Birmingham Detroit Country Day and Bloomfield Hills Andover, the most successful team in the county back in the 1980s, are honorable mention.
