STUDENT VIEW: Kuhn’s Corner: This is my bucket list, Rochester style
It’s amazing how quickly time flies. It seems that freshman year was only yesterday. Yet, in a few months time, plus summer, senior year will be here. And that provides food for thought. What should every Rochester High School student experience in the wide world of sports before graduating?
So, I decided to make a Bucket List, Rochester High School athletics style:
1) Attend a football game as a member of the Soldiers of Fortune: Every student should spend at least one night cheering the football team with all their might, win or lose. The SOF is an Rochester staple and, through all day tailgates and goofy outfits, provides one with memories to tell grandchildren.
2) Rush the football field: The adrenaline rush one gets counting down the final seconds then sprinting out onto the field to mob the football players and sing the fight song is amazing. From personally being in the middle of euphoric players, fans and cheerleaders celebrating, trust me, you’ll never forget it.
3) Go to a basketball game, besides the Crosstown Showdown: Almost every Falcon has gone to the Showdown at least once. But most, including myself, haven’t gone to a game at our home court. Plus, it’s probably a bonus that opponents can actually hear what is being yelled at them.
4) Swim in the pool … then complain about having to do so later: While anyone who has taken individual wellness has swum in the super-chlorinated pool, some people just choose not to. For those who haven’t, join the club. In case you just don’t like to swim, at least by doing so one will be able to complain about it like everyone else.
5) Go to a spring sports event: While nowhere near as popular as football, the spring sports — baseball, lacrosse, track, softball, tennis and golf — are still enjoyable and deserve to get some fans once in a while.
6) Do Lipsync at Homecoming: Yes, it’s technically not a sport, but choreographed dancing is exactly what our dance team does so it’s close enough. Lipsync is fun, brings one’s grade together and gives the winning grade bragging rights.
7) Go all out to a rivalry game: Going to a game versus Rochester Stoney Creek, or preferable Rochester Adams, decked out in all blue and white is a must for every student before graduation. Make a shirt, paint your face, and yell words you wouldn’t say to Grandma. And, if we win, it won’t matter if it’s home or away, the field or court will be covered in celebrating Falcons, allowing one to cross number two off one’s list.
So, that’s my list, and hopefully it will be finished before I kick the Rochester High School bucket. What’s yours? Send it to us or post it to our Rochester Talon Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/The-Talon/136639433038566. We’d love to read them. And hurry, time’s running out.
