REDFORD, Mich. – Junior Liz Ecker shot the second-lowest score of the day with a 75 (+3) to finish in third place (239/+23) and sophomore Mara Kovac shot a final round 82 and lost in a playoff to finish runner-up with an overall score of 238 (+22) to lead the Oakland University women’s golf team to the Detroit Titans Invitational title with an overall score of 983 (+119) on Tuesday at Western Golf and Country Club (Par 72, 5,854 yards).
“I’m proud of the way we played in these tough conditions,” said OU coach Brian Costello. “Scores were obviously higher than usual, but we played well enough to win. We were looking for some confidence heading into our league championship and I think we were able to accomplish that.”
The Golden Grizzlies finished six shots ahead of tournament host Detroit (989/+125). The Titans’ Alainna Stefan (238/+22) sunk a 25-footer for par on the first playoff hole and shot a final round low 74 to edge OU’s Kovac to capture medalist honors. Ecker finished just one shot out of the playoff, while UDM’s Lindsey Lammers (241/+25) and Ferris State’s Jacqueline DeBoer (245/+29) rounded out the top five.
Sophomore Alanna Gerber tallied a tie for seventh-place finish with an overall score of 250 (+34), shooting a final round 85. Freshman Donna Fiscelli shot 89 in the final round as the Golden Grizzlies played just four players in the final day of competition.
