Northwest’s McCatty guns down Greenhills

ROCHESTER HILLS — Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest’s strength this season is the pitching staff. The Crusaders showcased one of those arms Friday in a MIAC Blue Division game against Ann Arbor Greenhills.

Senior Luke McCatty fired a one-hitter, struck out nine and walked only one in leading Northwest to a 3-0 shutout of visiting Greenhills.

“I think pitching is our strength. We don’t have a lot of experience on the team outside of our pitchers,” said Northwest coach Mario Borocci. “We start sophomores, so we’re really young. I think we’re going to have to win games with our pitching and those seniors leading us, especially earlier in the season.”

Northwest (1-2, 1-1) scored two in the second inning and added an insurance run in the third to cap the scoring.

Travis Kersten was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI, including driving in a run in the second inning. Josh Morrison added an RBI single in the second frame.

In the third Kersten scored on a RBI by Justin Novack. McCatty continued to mow down the Gryphons after that point.

“Luke is one of our best players and I think he’s one of the best pitchers in our league,” said Borocci. “He had complete control of his pitches today. He was getting ahead of batters and getting a lot of strikeouts. We expect big things out of him this season.”
