ROCHESTER – Peyton Apsey signed a national letter of intent to play for the women’s basketball team at Oakland University next season, head coach Beckie Francis announced on Tuesday. In addition to being an all-state honorable mention basketball player, Apsey was the valedictorian at Hemlock High School.

“We are excited that Peyton will be joining our team,” said Francis. “She is a high school valedictorian that also helped her team advance to the state semifinals. We expect her to be an excellent student-athlete and a good fit for our team.”

This past season, Oakland had as many as seven players on the roster that played on Final Four teams in high school.

During her time at Hemlock, Apsey set the school’s single-season and career records for both steals and assists. As a senior she helped Hemlock reach the Class B state semifinals.

Individually, Apsey was a first team all-area and all-conference selection in each of the last two seasons, garnering Associated Press Class B All-State recognition as a senior. She was named to the Midland Dream Team as a junior and senior and also earned a spot on the Saginaw News Class B Dream Team.

In the classroom, Apsey finished with a 4.0 grade point average, the top GPA at Hemlock. She was a member of the National Honor Society (NHS) and served as class treasurer.

A gifted athlete, Apsey also participated in soccer, volleyball and track at Hemlock. She was an all-state soccer player and set the school record for most goals in a season. She was first team all-conference in volleyball and also participated in the high jump for the Hemlock track team.

While playing at Hemlock, Apsey was teammates with Shelby Herrington, a 6-foot-2 McDonald’s All-American player who has also committed to Oakland for next season.

“This season we had two high school teammates playing together in Malika Glover and Zakiya Minifee,” Francis added. “It was great to watch them push each other and grow as players. We are looking forward to seeing Peyton and Shelby working together.”

Lauren Robak and Halle Wangler have also committed to join Herrington and Apsey at Oakland next season as the members of the 2011-12 signing class. Last season Oakland won 20 games and advanced to The Summit League championship game.
