MILFORD — While the Oakland County Track and Championship always serves as a special meet, last season the meet gained some national attention.

With Rochester’s Megan Goethals scratching out of the 3,200 relay and 1,600, the nationally-ranked distance standout went after the state and national records in the 3,200-meter run at last year’s event. Goethals clocked 10:00.15 in the 3,200, one of the all-time best nationally and obliterating the state record for both the 3,200 and two-mile runs.

This time around, teams will again use the prestigious meet as a final tune-up for the state meets, which will be June 4 at four sites in the Grand Rapids area. For some athletes, it’s another meet not only to make headlines in Michigan, but to join the nation’s elite.

There is a handful of Oakland County-based athletes that are ranked in the nation in their respective events, which should again bring some attention to the meet, which was started in the early 1960s.

With over 50 schools in Oakland County participating track and field, over 75 percent will have competitors at the meet. The event has become a pre-state meet for many individuals, with competitors coming from schools in all four divisions.

“When you have that many schools, you never know what might happen,” offered Harrison girls coach Mark Babcock, whose Hawks were one of many county schools to win league and regional titles the previous two weekends.

PICKING UP THE PACE: West Bloomfield's Erin Finn and Rochester's Brook Handler are a pair of All-American cross-country races that are two nationally-ranked distance runners in track and field.

The Troy girls and the Novi Detroit Catholic Central boys are the defending team champions.

Catholic Central, Auburn Hills Avondale, Ferndale, Oxford, Birmingham Detroit Country Day, Farmington and Walled Lake Central appear to have the best chances to win the boys meet and fight for positions in the top 10. Lake Orion, West Bloomfield, Birmingham Brother Rice, Waterford Mott, Milford, Rochester and Southfield are some of the other schools expected to score well.

“Catholic Central has my vote, because they will score in a lot of events,” noted Lake Orion coach Stan Ford. “Avondale, Ferndale, some of these other schools will score in the sprints, but Catholic Central has the most balance.”

Individually, only Oxford’s Aaron Stuk (110 hurdles) and West Bloomfield’s Phillip Washington (400 meters) are returning county champions in the open events.

In the girls meet, Country Day, Novi, Troy, Rochester, Rochester Adams, Waterford Mott and Farmington Harrison will be among the leaders in the girls meet, while Southfield, Farmington, West Bloomfield, Lake Orion, Rochester Stoney Creek and Pontiac all have big-meet performers that will rack up points.

Troy edged Lake Orion and Rochester for the meet title, with the trio scoring 59, 58 and 56 points, respectively, although Rochester, the eventual state champion, scratched out of several events. Country Day and Southfield were just behind with 48 points apiece.

“The county is different, because it depends on if you load up kids in certain events or try to let them only run certain events, to go after good times or go after school records,” offered Troy coach Matt Richardson, whose team has won four straight regional titles and three straight league championships, sharing this year’s OAA Red Division crown with Rochester.  “We’ll see who does what, but there will be some fast times. There always is.”

There are several defending county champions in the girls meet, plus others that also hope to make a mark. Country Day’s Brittany Mann (discus), Southfield Lathrup’s Keianna Ingram (high jump), Country Day’s Kendall Baisden (100 and 200), Rochester’s Brook Handler (1,600) and Adams’ Jamie Morrissey (800) are all back after winning titles.

Two other athletes that were injured that will also contend this season are Mott’s Shannon Osika (1,600, 800) and West Bloomfield’s Erin Finn (1,600, 3,200), while Harrison hurdler Laticia Sims will make her county debut after running for Romulus the past two seasons.

In the boys meet, Ferndale’s Jamarius McTear and Avondale’s Trevon Salter are two of the state’s top sprinters, and their two shcools have posted some sizzling times in the 800 relay.

Walled Lake Central’s Travis Harris (shot put) and Country Day jumper Dartis Willis are also among the state leaders, with Willis also ranking among the best high jumpers in the nation with a leap of 7-2.

WHEELS: Auburn Hills Avondale junior Nathan Chapman is versatile enough to run the 200, 400 and 800, plus multiple relays for the Yellowjackets, who are among the county's top boys teams.

Catholic Central’s 3,200 relay has already dipped under 7:50, with Milford running right at 7:50. There are nine teams that have run 3:24 or faster in the 1,600 relay.

There is a deep field of runners in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 runs that will push the pace, led by Waterford Mott’s Scott Albaugh, Southfield Christian’s Victor Allen and White Lake Lakeland’s Garrett Zuk.
