Clarkston tied atop D-1 tennis field after first day; Rochester’s Dieters back in semifinals for fourth time

MIDLAND, Mich. — Clarkston has played the last month of the girls tennis season as the No. 1-ranked team in Division 1. Now, the Wolves are in a dogfight for their first title.

Clarkston finished up the day of competition Friday at the Midland community tennis Center tied atop the standings along with Ann Arbor Pioneer with 21 points.

Midland Dow has 16, with Port Huron Northern (14), Northville (13) and Saline (13) just behind.

Locally, Troy is in ninth place (10 points) and Rochester is tied for 10th (eight points). Troy Athens did not score any points as the first three rounds were completed Friday.

The semifinals and finals will take place Saturday.

Rochester’s Kelsey Dieters advanced to the state semifinals at No. 1 singles for the fourth straight year. The top-seeded Dieters is now 27-0 on the season.

All four of Clarkston’s singles players also reached the semifinals, as Gabriella Spindler (No. 1), top-seeded Lexi Baylis (No. 2), top-seeded Katie Brozovich (No. 3) and Kristina Lucas (No. 4), the second seed, are all still in the hunt for finals berth and championships.

In the doubles flights, Clarkston’s No. 1 duo of twins Dana and Paige Olsen advanced to the Final Four. The Wolves’ No. 3 unit of Olivia Dunn and Allie Wilson and their No. tandem of Annie Gencay and Monique Zetner are also in the hunt.

Additionally, Rochester’sNo. 4 double team of Stephan e Handley and Stephanie bon Behren also advanced  to the state semifinals.
