Avondale ties for 12th at D-2 golf finals

EAST LANSING — Top-ranked DeWitt prevailed at the Lower Peninsula Division 2 state finals Friday-Saturday at Michigan State University’s Forest Akers East Golf Course, posting a two-day total of 586.

DeWitt had a 292 first day effort and a 294 showing on the second day to easily outdistance the 15-school field. Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood was second at 603, followed by Clio (609), Tecumseh (611) and big Rapids (615).

Locally, Auburn Hills Avondale tied for 12th overall with South Lyon with a 631 total.

Cranbrook’s Griffin Smith was medalist with a 141, carding rounds of 70 and 71 to prevail.Bobby Vandenberg of Richland Gull Lake, Chris Noble of Niles and Tecumseh’s bobby Thomas were two strokes back at 143, while Clio’s Brett Long and DeWitt’s Alex Jones both shot 144 to tie for fifth.

Champion DeWitt had two other finishers in the top-10, as Davis Dekorte tied for seventh at 146 and Tyler Polulak was 10th.

Avondale, the only local school to qualify in D-2, was paced by Blake Blomberg’s 152. Spencer Jacobson followed with a 155, Troy May a 161, Steven Carter a 166 and Steven Turner a 168.
