OU’s Jones runs to title at Golden Grizzlies Open
ROCHESTER, Mich. – Lia Jones clocked a time of 14:09.4 to finish first in the women’s 4K race, while Kenny Wall finished second in the men’s 6K race with a time of 19:15.2 (6K) to lead the Oakland University men’s and women’s cross country teams at the Golden Grizzly Open on Friday.
“It’s a good start to the season,” said OU coach Paul Rice. “The heat plays havoc on a day like today, and everyone responds to it differently. Lia (Jones) ran nice and relaxed today and that was the goal. She got out in front and we didn’t want her to push it too hard.
“Overall top to bottom they did very well. We have been training very hard and we do not rest until October. The first two or three races they get tired, but they get used to that.”
Brittni Hutton finished behind Jones in the women’s race with a time of 14:36.5 rounding out top-five finishes for the Golden Grizzlies. For the men, Brandon Griffin and Steven Marcinkowski posted top-five finishes with times of 19:32.8 (3rd) and 19:57.4 (5th), respectively.
Former OU graduate and standout Jason Bigelow crossed the finish line in first place with a time of 19:08.2, competing unattached. Detroit’s Edwin Gay was the top collegiate finisher on the men’s side with a time of 19:10.9.
