Golden Grizzlies third at Fossum Invitational
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michael Coriasso opened with a 2-under-par 70 and shot 146 (+2) on the day, while teammate Phil Gieseker carded a score of 74 in each round as the Oakland University men’s golf team (291-299/590) stands third after day one of the Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers West Golf Course (Par 72, 7,013 yards) on Saturday.
Tournament host Michigan State leads with an overall score of 586 (+10), three shots in front of IUPUI (+13) and four clear of OU (+14). The Golden Grizzlies led after the first 18 holes with a team score of 291 (+3), but finished with a second-round 299 (+11).
“The team is in good spirits despite a tough second round,” said OU coach Russ Cunningham. “We did not play well as a group in the afternoon, but still have a chance to win tomorrow.”
Coriasso led after 18 holes, but shot 76 in the second round and is currently in a tie for eighth place at 2-over-par, four shots off the lead. Gieseker is tied for 15th place at 4-over-par, with teammates Matt Domagalski (74-74) and Trevor Rosekrans (73-75).
“We are looking forward to smooth greens and cooler temperatures on Sunday morning so we can post a low score,” said Gieseker.
Tennessee State’s Cameron Scitern holds the lead after 36 holes with a 2-under-par score of 142 (72-70). MSU’s Matthew Moseley shot 72 and 71 as an individual competitor and is 1-under-par, while teammate Dan Ellis fired a pair of even-par scores of 72.
