Oakland women fall to No. 18 Dayton
DAYTON, Ohio – For the second straight season, Oakland couldn’t measure up to nationally-ranked Dayton.
The 18th-ranked Flyers outshot the visiting Golden Grizzlies 24-3 and posted a 2-1 non-league women’s soccer victory at the Baujan Field.
“We had a very good start to the game,” said Oakland head coach Nick O’Shea, “I think we played well for the early part of the match, but Dayton is a good team and they fought their way back into the game. Once they gained the ascendency it was hard for us to get going again.”
Julianne Boyle Put Oakland (2-8-0) ahead in the 17th minute when she scored her first goal of the season. The play started with a long pass from Boyle to Serena San Cartier. Boyle continued her run forward and received the ball back from San Cartier to get through to goal and unleashed a low shot into the far post to put OU in front.
“It’s good to see Julianne Boyle get her first goal of the year,” said O’Shea. “She has been working hard all season and it’s good to see her effort rewarded.”
Dayton (10-1-0) tied the game in the 35th minute on a goal from Kelsey Smigel. Kelsey Miller hit a long ball forward and miscommunication between the OU defenders and goalkeeper allowed Smigel to reach the ball first and she scored after dribbling past the goalkeeper. Just before halftime, Smigel played a through-ball to Colleen Williams, who scored to give UD the 2-1 lead.
The two teams played a scoreless second half in which Dayton outshot Oakland 16-1. However, the Golden Grizzlies nearly tied the match on a shot by San Cartier, which was cleared off the line by Emily Kenyon. OU goalkeeper Anne Berschbach recorded eight saves. Neither Katherine Boone nor Jordin Melchert recorded a save for UD.
