Barrett’s goal lifts Oakland past league-leading IPFW
ROCHESTER HILLS — Andrew Barrett took the monkey off of Oakland University’s back Saturday night.
Struggling to score goals and winless in the Summit League, Barrett scored the game-winning goal as the Oakland men’s soccer team won, 1-0, over Summit League-leading IPFW on Saturday at the OU Soccer Field.
It was the second home shutout of the year for the Golden Grizzlies.
“I’m really proud of the effort from our players,” said Oakland head coach Eric Pogue. “In our other league games we had been a bit unlucky, but tonight we made our own luck.”
Barrett scored the game-winner with a long-distance shot in the 32nd minute for Oakland (3-9-1, 1-2-0). Lucas Diener played the ball to Barrett and he struck a bending and dipping shot that beat the goalkeeper from nearly 30 yards out.
After taking the lead, the Oakland defense of John Timm, John DeLeon, Nick Kristock, Konner McNamara and Diener tightened up and allowed IPFW just three shots on goal. OU goalkeeper Mitch Hildebrandt made three saves to earn his first shutout of the season.
Winston Henderson nearly doubled the lead in the 83rd minute, but his shot was stopped by IPFW goalkeeper Brandon Cloutier. However, the Mastodons’ goalkeeper had used his hands to stop the ball the outside the penalty area and was shown a red card for the infraction.
With the one-player advantage, Oakland had five scoring chances over the final seven minutes of play. Henderson came closest to scoring on a free kick which landed just over the crossbar.
Max Touloute had the best offensive chances for IPFW, but his two early shots went wide of the post. The leading scorer in The Summit League, Touloute had eight shots, with the majority coming from long range. IPFW outshot Oakland 14-12 in the match.
Oakland remains undefeated against IPFW (6-7-1, 2-1-0) with a 16-0-0 record against the Mastodons.
The Golden Grizzlies return to action on Wednesday against local rivals Detroit at the OU Soccer Field at 7 p.m.
