IPFW sweeps Oakland in straight sets
ROCHESTER HILLS – IPFW trip to Oakland was much longer that its sweep of the Golden Grizzlies in Summit League volleyball play Saturday.
Taylor Humm had nine kills and 12 digs and Ashley Nevelle had 21 assists as the Oakland volleyball fell to IPFW in straight sets on Saturday night in the Athletics Center O’rena. IPFW posted wins of 25-20, 25-19 and 25-23.
“This is a tough loss to a league opponent that we have a rivalry with,” said head coach Rob Beam. “IPFW had an attack mentality all night and did a very good job passing and serving. Our bench players played very well tonight and we will have to regroup and be energized for a good Bowling Green team on Tuesday.”
Humm and Brittany Holbrook led the front line as Holbrook added seven kills and had seven total blocks on the night. Alli Kirk led the backline with 16 digs.
Both teams played a tight first set as the game was tied 18-18 but despite to Oakland (10-9, 5-5) timeouts IPFW went on to win seven of the last nine points to take the set 25-20. The Mastodons jumped out quickly in the second set to take control of the match as they led by as many as 12 points behind a team hitting percentage of .367 in the set.
The Golden Grizzlies fought back in the third set holding IPFW (15-6, 8-2) to a .089 hitting percentage and went on a late run to be only a point behind with the score 24-23. However, OU could not keep the run going and lost the final set 25-23.
Oakland will be in action in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday as they take on Bowling Green State University at 7 p.m. in the Athletics Center O’rena. For fans who cannot attend the match, live stats will be available through gametracker at OUgrizzlies.com.
