FARGO, N.D. – Despite a 19-10 shots edge, Oakland University couldn’t find the back of the net in 1-0 loss to North Dakota State.

Julianne Boyle had five shots to the Oakland women’s soccer team (4-10-1, 2-2-1), which failed to score in a 1-0 loss to North Dakota State (13-2-1, 6-0-0) on Sunday at the Elig Sports Complex. The Golden Grizzlies outshot the Bison 19-10.

“We played under very windy conditions that made it a tough game,” said Oakland head coach Nick O’Shea. “In the end it came down to physicality and set plays. They got their goal on a set play and showed that they were more physical than we are.”

After North Dakota State took the lead, Oakland nearly had an immediate response from Nicole DeLuca. Unfortunately for OU, her shot hit the crossbar and bounced away from the goal. Shortly thereafter Meghan Reynolds came close with a shot that was saved.

Morgan DeMike gave NDSU an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the 21st minute. The goal started with a long throw, which Oakland failed to clear and the ball fell to DeMike who scored from just outside the penalty area.

Oakland poured on the pressure and outshot NDSU 13-3 in the second half. Boyle led OU with five shots, while DeLuca had four and Reynolds three. Both DeLuca and Reynolds had two shots on goal.

“In a lot of matches you see one team with a distinct shot advantage and they didn’t really create too many scoring chances,” said O’Shea. “That was not the case today, as their goalkeeper made at least four outstanding saves to keep them in the game.”

Anne Berschbach made six saves in net for Oakland. Kalani Bertsch finished with eight saves in goal for NDSU.

The Golden Grizzlies will return to Summit League play on Friday with a match against Oral Roberts at the OU Soccer Field at 7 p.m.
