AUBURN HILLS — Caleb combs sent a message to his players a couple of days ago about trying to up the level of play the rest of the state tournament. Apparently, the members of Auburn Hills Oakland Christian’s soccer team heard the message loud and clear.

The sixth-ranked Lancers advance to the district finals with a 5-0 victory over Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest, defeating the Crusaders for the third time this season.

“Apparently my message was heard by my players, because we scored three goals in the first five minutes of the game,” said Combs, the Lancers’ third-year head coach. “We only gave up one shot on goal the entire game.”

Oakland Christian (16-5-1) came out on fire and never allowed the Crusaders (6-14-2) a chance to make a serious threat.

Clifford Baxter opener up the scoring just two minutes into the game, while John VanNoord and Daniel Smith also scored for the Lancers moments later.

Drew Perrin and J.J. Schomer scored in the second half to cap the scoring. Spencer Hodges and Chris Polite both had two assists on the night, while Brandon Delekta had the other assist for the Lancers.

Luke combs, in his first season as a starter, notched his eighth shutout on one save for Oakland Christian, who will host Sterling Heights Parkway Christian at 11 a.m. Saturday for the district championship.

The Lancers are going after their sixth straight district trophy and 10th in 12 years.
