CLARKSTON — Halloween was only a few days ago, but Clarkston still received a little scare Thursday night.

The fourth-ranked Wolves fell behind visiting Fenton 1-0 before rallying for a 3-1 triumph in a Class A girls volleyball district finals against the Tigers.

Fenton, which has not lost a match in the Flint Metro League for four seasons, won the first game, 26-24, only to see Clarkston rally for 25-19, 25-16 and 25-19 wins to take the match and advance to the regional semifinals next Tuesday at Lapeer West.

“I told the girls all week that Fenton would likely be the team in our district that we would see in the finals, and also the team that would give us the most problems,” offered Clarkston coach Kelly Avenall. “I think falling behind 1-0 was good. I think they realized that I wasn’t joking with them.”

The Wolves will face the winner of the Flushing-Flint Carman-Ainsworth district final next week in regional play.

Stephanie Marani had 17 kills and six blocks to lead Clarkston. Kaley Konjarevich chipped in with 15 kills, Rachel Dickerson had seven kills and Maddie Lightfoot chipped in with 25 digs for the Wolves (52-5-0), who have now won five straight district crowns and seven in the past nine seasons.

“We won districts the first two years I was here, then we didn’t make it out the next two and now we have won five straight,” said Avenall. “That is a credit to the girls we’ve had here.

“This year I felt that Fenton would give us a challenge. I thought that when we lost that first game, that we kind of wok up,” said Avenall. “I think we needed to be in that situation.
