ELMHURST, Ill. – The Oakland men’s golf team was selected to finish eighth in The Summit League Preseason Poll, announced by the league office on Tuesday morning. The poll is voted on by the league’s 10 head coaches.

“The ranking is no surprise since we had an inexperienced team in the fall,” said first-year head coach Russ Cunningham. “The only ranking we care about is the final one at The Summit League Championship.”

UMKC edged out IUPUI by just one point as the league favorite. The Jaguars had a league-high six first-place votes, but the Kangaroos had 74 points to IUPUI’s 73. Southern Utah was picked third (1 first-place vote) with 67 points, Oral Roberts fourth with 56 points, and South Dakota State was fifth with 41 points to round out the top five. The Jackrabbits were followed by IPFW (39 points), Western Illinois (37 points), Oakland (36 points), North Dakota State (17 points) and South Dakota (10 points).

The Golden Grizzlies had a pair of top-five finishes back in the fall at the Fossum Invitational (3rd) and the CSU Invitational (4th). Phil Gieseker led the team in scoring average with a 73.50, No. 9 in the league. Michael Coriasso currently stands in a tie for 10th with a stroke average of 74.50.

OU will open the spring season at Cal State Fullerton’s tournament in Industry, Calif. The 54-hole tournament will take place Feb. 19-21 on Eisenhower Golf Course.
