WATERFORD — It’s safe to say that Hartland definitely has Clarkston’s number when it comes to postseason wrestling.

The fifth-ranked Eagles knocked out the Wolves in the Division 1 state tournament for the fifth time in nine season Wednesday, topping Clarkston, 44-24, in the regional finals.

It marks the third straight year that Hartland has defeated the Wolves in the regional finals.

Hartland defeated Clarkston, 48-15, last season, while the Eagles dispatched the Wolves, 42-19, in the Sweet 16 two years ago. Hartland also defeated Clarkston, 45-18, in the state semifinals in 2004, while they toppled the Wolves in the 2008 regional semifinals, 37-24.

That’s five times in less than a decade.

“It is frustrating,” admitted first-year Clarkston head coach Derek Moskovic, who noted the Clarkston has won 10 districts in the past 14 years. “You always want to win. We wrestled hard. Hartland was the better team than us tonight.”

“We were a little bit younger team this year. We have a lot of underclassmen in the lineup and they did a nice job fighting hard. We just didn’t get enough upsets to beat them.”

Hartland slammed Farmington Harrison, 74-0, in one semifinal, while Clarkston cruised past Birmingham Seaholm, 53-21.

In the finals, Hartland picked up wins from Nate Hughes (103), Jacob Gorial (112), Anthony Colaianne (140), Nate Smith (145), Mitchell Thomas (152), Chad Maks (160), Matt Ostermiler (189) and Brian Brown (215).

Jake Dionne (130), Michael Cardinale (135) and Chris Calvano (171) all won for Clarkston, plus the Wolves (20-10) gained wins by void at 285 and 125. The victories in six weight classes wasn’t nearly enough.

“We needed to wrestle at our very best. Hartland is a good team and they have been to Battle Creek the past several years,” said Moskovic. “They can get the points all over the lineup.”
