Golden Grizzlies earn No. 3 seed for Summit League tournament

VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) — Oakland University closed out the regular season with five straight league wins and a 5-1 overall mark, and that has enabled the Golden Grizzlies to grab the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Summit League men’s basketball tournament.

Reggie Hamilton scored 31 points and set the Summit League’s single-season scoring record as Oakland defeated South Dakota 84-77 on Saturday night. Hamilton surpassed the mark of North Dakota State’s Ben Woodside, who scored 766 points in 2008-09. Hamilton has 790.

Travis Bader hit six of Oakland’s 14 3-pointers and scored 21, while Drew Valentine had 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Golden Grizzlies (17-14, 11-7), who won both the regular season and league tournament crown in both 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 and finished second in 2008-2009, vaulted to third place in the standings.

Drew Valentine added 13 points, 10 rebounds and four assists for Oakland.

Charlie Westbrook led the Coyotes (10-18, 5-13) with 21 points, finishing with 1,009 for his career. Trevor Gruis had 18 points and 14 rebounds, Louie Krogman scored 17 and Jordan Boots had 10 points. Krogman finished sixth in school history with 1,644 points.

Oakland, which swept the season series, trailed only once but never led by more than 10 points.

In their first year in the league, the Coyotes were ineligible for the postseason.
