Track icon Ambrose passes at 101
Michigan high school track and field icon Kermit Ambrose, who coached and was an track and field and cross country official for over 60 years in Michigan, has died. He was 101 years old.
Ambrose died of natural causes in his Bloomfield Hills residence.
Funeral arrangements include the viewing: Friday, March 2, from 4-8 p.m.; service is Saturday, March 3 at 11 a.m. at Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14 & 15 Mile Roads) in Clawson, Michigan, 48017; and the internment will take place at White Chapel Cemetery in Troy immediately following the service.

Ambrose, who was born in Pierce, Neb., was active in the track and cross country circles since coming to Michigan in the early 1950s. He was one of the founders of the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association (MITCA) and mentored thousands of coaches, athletes and other officials.
Much of Ambrose’s coaching carer was spent at Birmingham Seaholm, where his teams were annually amongst the top 10 in cross country and track.
