FARMINGTON HILLS — Since launching its bowling program a decade ago, Clarkston has fielded many quality boys teams. In fact, the Wolves have qualified for the state finals on a few occasions.
Clarkston added a first to its resume at Drakeshire Lanes in Farmington Hills Friday and Saturday.
The unranked Wolves posted an impressive 3,863 team score to topple the star-studded 13-school field that featured several programs that have excelled at the state level in recent years — good enough to capture the school’s first regional title.
Novi Detroit Catholic Central, (3,841) which won the state title two years ago and came into the meet ranked seventh, was second, while unranked Farmington-Harrison Unified was third (3,660).
The top three teams and the top 10 singles players advance to the Division 1 state finals March 2-3 at M-66 Bowl north of Battle Creek.
“I think we had a lot of kids step up and have great days, which is what you need on a day like this,” said Clarkston co-coach Lenny Kersten. “I believe this is our first regional here. We beat some very good teams, too.”
Lake Orion was the first of the talented teams left on the outside looking in, as the Dragons were fourth (3657), only three pins behind Unified in the competition that included six Baker games and three individual games by each of the six participants on each roster. Waterford Mott was fifth (3,637), only 23 pins off the mark.
Sophomore Eric Wagner led Clarkston in the team competition, while junior Kyle Kirby and seniors Chris Gemborys, Tyler Hancsak, Bryan Billips and Max Wolfgang also were on the state-qualifying team.
“I thought Eric Wagner had a really strong day in the (team competition). He was a little off in the singles, but he was strong for us all season,” noted Kersten. “I thought Kyle Kirby and Brian Billups also had strong performances. But we needed it. There were some really good teams here. They picked the right time to have a good day (collectively).”
In singles play, Catholic Central’s Eric Pavlov claimed the individual crown Saturday, bowling a 1,256 total. Lake Orion had three individuals make the singles cut, as Kevin Yang was second (1,233) and Mike Brummitt fifth (1,213).
White Lake Lakeland’s Nicholas Hubbard was third (1,219) and Waterford Kettering’s Billy Eller fourth (1,215). Mike Marcetti (sixth, 1,209) was Lake Orion’s other state qualifier out of singles play.
In the girls team regional, unranked North Farmington was the surprise winner, topping Oakland County and OAA Red Division league champion Lake Orion, which has spent several weeks ranked in the top 10 in the state this season. Lake Orion, ranked sixth, followed 39 pins back at 3,497 and Walled Lake Central gained the other coveted state qualifying spot at 3,485.
Clarkston was a distant fourth at 3,443, while Lakeland finished fifth (3,367) out of 13 schools.
In singles play, Lake Orion’s Kate Gladstone, last year’s state runner-up, fired a 1,138 total to win the individual crown. North Farmington’s Rae’ven Turner was second (1,132), with Britney Antonelli was third (1,125), Lake Orion’s Casey Baryla fourth (1,051) and Walled Lake Western’s Lindsay Brown fifth (1,064).
Clarkston’s Stephanie Lavely (1,077) was sixth to qualify for the third year in a row.
