DAYTON, Ohio – Aaron Cieslak was 3-for-3 and had a home run, as Oakland (3-12) rallied from four runs down before falling, 8-7, to Dayton (6-12) on Sunday at Woerner Field. The Golden Grizzlies scored four runs in the eighth inning to take a 6-5lead.

“We lost a tough one to a good team today,” said Oakland coach John Musachio. “We need to do a better job of throwing more strikes, having better at-bats early in the game and getting two-out base hits; especially with runners in scoring position. Those are prerequisites for winning close games and we have struggled to win those types of games lately.”

Trailing 5-1, Mike Carson started the OU rally with a towering home run to straightaway center in the sixth inning. In the eighth Spencer Marentette hit a bases-loaded single to make it 5-3. John Estes then singled to bring in two more runs and tie the game. Estes eventually came in to score on a misplay by the Dayton second baseman to put OU ahead.

Dayton responded immediately in the bottom of the eighth, scoring three runs to regain the lead. Mel Skockdopole hit a leadoff double and later come in to score. C.J. Gillman later hit a two-RBI single to put UD in front 8-6.

Cieslak homered in the top of the ninth to make it a one-run game, but OU couldn’t complete a second rally. The Golden Grizzlies outhit Dayton 11-10 with Trent Drumheller and Robby Enslen both going 2-for-4.

Drumheller (Rochester Stoney Creek) gave Oakland an early 1-0 lead when he scored from second on a wild pitch in the first inning. However, Dayton responded in the bottom of the frame with a leadoff home run by Ian Hundley, as the Flyers scored two in the bottom of the first to regain the lead. Dayton added a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take the lead 5-1.

Pitchers on both teams worked out of jams for most of the game, as Oakland stranded nine base runners and Dayton left 10. OU pitchers induced three double plays, while Dayton benefited from one double play.

Jason Hager (0-2) had four strikeouts over 3.1 innings, but took the loss in relief for OU. Matthew Miller (1-2) got the win for Dayton, pitching the final 1.1 innings.

Oakland finished the weekend 1-3. OU split two games against Canisius and went 0-2 against Dayton.
