ROCHESTER HILLS — Some athletes have a competitive nature. Then there’s Nathan Drews.

Drews, a senior two-sport athlete at Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest, is as competitive as they come at the school. He entered Northwest in 2009 as an athlete to watch. Now he is in the midst of becoming one of the school’s all-time best.

The two-sport star is in the beginning stages of his senior campaign as a third-year starter at quarterback on the Crusaders’ football team and a fourth-year starter at shooting guard in basketball — and has high expectations.

“I am really competitive,” offered the 6-foot-1, 180-pound Drews. “I just want to what it takes to help my team win.”

Drews is closing in on multiple school records in both sports and is not also considered one the school’s all-time best athletes but one of the school’s all-time best leaders.

“Nathan is such a great kid and he’s the type of player that others look up to,” said Northwest football head coach and athletics director Don Justice. “He’s the type of kid that you want to lead your program. He’s a great athlete, leader and great competitor.”

Last season in football, he was named to the Michigan Independent Athletic Conference First Team in football along with being honored as All-Area Honorable Mention and All Oakland County Honorable Mention. He has passed for over 1,600 yards in each of the past two seasons.

In basketball, he was again named All-MIAC First Team, All-Area Third Team and All-County Honorable Mention. Drews averaged around 20 points last season and scored over 30 points in a contest twice.

Although Northwest has never won a league or district championship in basketball, Drews hopes to make some history this school year. The Crusaders have never won a district in football, either.

“We have never won a district in either football or basketball,” said Drews. “That is one of our goals. We would also love to win the league title this year. Last year in football, we had a down year and we won it as a sophomore. This season want to (regain) the league title and become the first to win a district championship.

“We have some big goals for this year,” said Drews.

Drews is starting to gain some small-college interest for both sports and really has a goal of playing collegiate hoops. Also a standout on his AAU travel basketball squad, TEAM Basketball, Drews excels in the offseason.

He would be an absolute steal for any college that recruits this competitive.

That is one of my goals…for next year,” offered Drews. “Right now, I just to help my school have a great season.  I think we can have a great year.”
