STICK’S PICKS: Week 6, football fans … What is your favorite postgame sports bar?
Here’s a question that all high school sports fans in the area should think about: When your game is over, where do you go, especially after a Friday or Saturday contest?
To clarify where we are coming from, where do you go means which sports bar in what town do the athletes, families, coaches, referees and fans go to immediately after an game, event or invitational?
Judging by how full a dozens of sports bars area in the area, especially after football and basketball games on Friday nights, it’s a legitimate question to ask: What is your favorite sports bar in the area?
Back in July, the staff at NOS launched a poll which will run for one calendar year. This list includes over 60 sports bars from communities across the NorthOaklandSports coverage area and even some sports bars that are located just outside of the coverage area. From southern Troy to Holly and Fenton, and from Utica and Rochester and everywhere in-between … this is your chance to pick your favorite.
Go to the poll at the end of Stick’s Picks prep football column and vote today. Spread the word and share this link on legions of social media networks.
In terms of games this week, this is Week 6 and three local teams — Clarkston, Lake Orion and Pontiac Notre Dame Prep — can clinch postseason berths with wins while several others in the hunt over the next couple of weeks.
We’re getting down to the final month of the regular season.
Now on with the picks:
(Last week 10-1, .909 PCT.; Season, 39-12, .765 PCT.)
Friday’s Games
AUBURN HILLS AVONDALE AT BIRMINGHAM SEAHOLM (7 p.m.): Avondale has an explosive offense and Seaholm a stingy defense. Perhaps team speed will be the difference and the Yellowjackets have plenty of that.
PICK: Avondale by 1.
ROCHESTER ATLAKE ORION (7 p.m.): Only in recent years has this game meant anything. Rochester is likely a playoffs team. State-ranked Lake Orion counters with a little bit too much speed, which will wear the Falcons down.
PICK: Lake Orion by 7.
PONTIAC AT CLARKSTON (7 p.m.): Clarkston is ranked No. 1 in the state. The Phoenix will become the Wolves latest feast.
PICK: Clarkston by 21.
ROCHESTER STONEY CREEK AT TROY ATHENS (7 p.m.): Injury-riddled and youthful Athens is starting to play better after a disastrous first three weeks of the season. Stoney Creek is the area’s most improved team. The Cougars will have to work for this one, but get the job done.
PICK: Stoney Creek by 7.
ROCHESTER ADAMS AT FARMINGTON (7 p.m.): If Adams loses, then the Highlanders’ streak of 15 straight postseason will officially come to an end with a fifth defeat.
PICK: Farmington by 10.
WEST BLOOMFIELD AT TROY (7 p.m.): Troy is part of the second tier of teams in the OAA Red Division, along with Rochester and Rochester Stoney Creek. The Colts are not Clarkston and Lake Orion, the No. 1 and No. 2-ranked teams in the state in Division 1, but they could be a playoffs team with a win streak.
PICK: Troy by 14.
OXFORD AT SOUTHFIELD (7 p.m.): A pair of 3-2 teams trying to stay in the OAA White title chase. Thinking Oxford is a little underrated at this point, taking both Lake Orion (No. 2 in Division 1) and Farmington (No. 7 Division 2) to the brink. The Wildcats could steal a road win here.
PICK: Oxford by 3.
ROCHESTER HILLS LUTHERAN NORTHWEST AT SOUTHFIELD CHRISTIAN (7 p.m.): Yawn. Wake us when Northwest plays Grosse Pointe Woods University-Liggett.
PICK: Lutheran Northwest by 14.
LUTHERAN WESTLAND AT ROCHESTER HILLSLUTHERAN NORTHWEST AT AUBURN HILLS OAKLAND CHRISTIAN (7 p.m.): Still think the Oakland Christian has enough athletes to win a game on the field. The Lancers’ sole victory was via forfeit.
PICK: Lutheran Westland by 1.
DEARBORN DIVINE CHILD AT PONTIAC NOTRE DAME PREP (7:30 p.m.): After starting 0-5 in the 2010 regular season, NDP has won 18 straight regular season games. Check that, make it 19 straight after Friday.
SWARTZ CREEK AT ORTONVILLE BRANDON (7 p.m.): Here’s a thought. Swartz Creek was picked as a middle-of-the-pack team and is now 5-0 and one win from the playofss. The Dragons are also on course for their first league title in the FML since 1986.
PICK: Swartz Creek by 10.
HOLLY AT LAPEER WEST (7 p.m.): Fall is in the air and so is an upset.
PICK: Holly by 7.
Saturday’s Games
BLOOMFIELD HILLS CRANBROOK AT WATERFORD OUR LADY OF THE LAKES (1 p.m.): Lakes was upset by Allen Park Cabrini in Week 5. That won’t happen again this week.
PICK: WOLL by 16.
