FOOTBALL: Lake Orion cruises past Stevenson
LAKE ORION — Only two teams have been able to give Lake Orion much of a challenge this season. Sterling Heights Stevenson was not one of them.
In a rematch of a 2008 regional final, the home-standing Dragons made sure they would not need to stage a game-winning field goal to advance. This time Lake Orion rolled over the Titans, 35-0, in a Division 1 pre-district.
Zach Arnold had 70 yards on eight carries, Corey Ester added 59 yards on eight rushes and Jacob Miller added nine carries for 55 yards for Lake Orion (9-1), who will host Utica Eisenhower next Friday for the district championship. Chaz Miller had four catches for 82 yards for the Dragons.
Lake Orion outgained Stevenson 468-156 and set off the running clock early in the third quarter.
Dominick Giovinazzo opened the scoring with a 29-yard touchdown run with 5:41 left in the first quarter and that set the tone. Chaz Miller caught a 55-yard Derek DeLaura heave with 9:23 left in the second quarter to make it 14-0, while the Dragons scored on two more drives of the first half.
Zack Arnold scored on a 42-yard sprint with 6:51 left in the second and Miller hauled in another 17-yard strike from the arm of DeLaura with 1 minute left in the first half.
In the third quarter, Chris Leigh caught a 7-ayrd pass from DeLaura in the third quarter for Lake Orion and Jeremy King nailed all five extra points for the Dragons.
