ROCHESTER — Alex Waelchli of Lake Orion and Jacob Johnson of Lansing both signed letters-of-intent to play college golf at Oakland University recently, to round off a solid recruiting class for the Golden Grizzlies.
“I am very pleased that Alex and Jacob decided to join our program,” said O coach Russ Cunningham. “I’m excited to see how much each of these young men can improve prior to next fall. Both are highly motivated as they are preparing for their senior season this spring and they each have a full summer of competition ahead of them before coming here.
“They both have similar skill sets and are well-rounded student-athletes as evident by their all-state recognition, academic success, and other numerous honors and awards,” added Cunningham.”
Johnson, who attends Lansing Catholic Central, was the 2012 Michigan PGA Junior tour Player of the Year and a Division 3 All-State First Team selection.
Waelchli, who attends Lake Orion High School, finished 12th at the AJGA Randy Wise Junior Open last summer after a solid prep season, where he earned All-OAA Red Division and All-North Oakland Area honors among numerous postseason accolades.
“Jacob is an excellent student who has the physical skills to make an immediate impact,” said Cunningham. “Jacob has shown he knows how to win and that experience will prove invaluable as he continues to develop the mental and physical skills necessary to take his game to the next level.
“Alex has proven to everyone that he can compete with and beat some of the top players in the Midwest,” added Cunningham on Waelchli. “Alex knows he can go low, so it’s just a matter of time before he combines the confidence and patience necessary to do it on a regular basis.”
