DAVISON — A change of scenery Saturday suited Lake Orion just fine.

Competing in a Flint-area Division 1 district for the first time, the state-ranked Dragons won their first competitive cheer district title since 2009, the first season the MHSAA added the district level of competition.

Lake Orion’s district crown featured a three-round total of 748.8000 at Davison High School and was a convincing victory, as the Dragons won by some 21 points over runner-up Oxford (727.8600).

The top four teams from each district advance to the regional round Feb. 23 across the state. The Dragons will head to Novi to join a host of state-ranked schools amongst the 12-school field at the regional.

“It was different being up at Davison. The warm-up (room) was behind the mats and we got a chance to compete somewhere different against some different teams,” said Lake Orion coach Nancy DeAvila. “I am happy with our performance. Not just the win, but the fact that we are moving on to the regional, which was the main goal.”

Bay City Central as third (724.7000) and Davison finished fourth (721.6200) at the Davison district to become part of the group improving onto the regional level. Clarkston finished fifth (706.9000), followed by Romeo (705.8000), Grand Blanc (702.0800), Midland Dow (695.0000), Flint Carman-Ainsworth (639.5400), Saginaw Heritage (639.5400), Port Huron (603.4600), Traverse City West (588.9800) and Port Huron Northern (528.1000) in the 14-school district field.

Lake Orion won the first two rounds and finished third in Round III to win convincingly overall.

The Dragons collected 228.8 points in the first round, followed by Bay City Central (224.2), Oxford, 2240.0), Romeo (222.5) and Clarkston (222.5).

Lake Orion’s 223.90 points led Round II, with Davison (214.42), Bay City Central (204.30), Oxford (202.66) and Grand Blanc (199.78) following suit.

The Dragons had such a big lead entering Round III that no other team could pose a serious threat.

“We had a good day, but we know we can do better. We had a couple of problems with our Round III and we’ll need to correct those by next weekend,” said DeAvila.”We will have schools like Hudsonville, Grandville, (Holland) West Ottawa and Hartland there, too. And Brighton will likely be there and they are strong to. There will be six, seven really good teams at our regional and only four will go to state. We will have to be at the top of our game.”

Oxford grabbed the highest score in the third round, posting 301.2 points to solidify its runner-up finish on the day. Bay City Central (296.2), Lake Orion (296.1), Midland Dow (287.9) and Clarkston (286.7) rounded out the top five in Round III.
