TOLEDO, Ohio — Erin Galloway and Abbie Richardson each hit sacrifice flies in the eighth inning of game two and Bailee Braunreuther  earned her first win of the season to lead the Oakland softball team to split a doubleheader with Toledo with a 9-7 victory in extra innings and a 6-2 defeat in Game 1, at the Scott Park Softball Complex on Tuesday.

“After a very heartbreaking lose, this team really showed their unity and fight by answering every challenge thrown their way by winning this game in the eighth inning,” said coach Connie Miner. “Bailee came in and shut them down. Every member of this team contributed to this win. I am so proud of my team.”

Jackie Kisman finished the day with a team-high four hits and Whitney Weston tallied three hits in game two and scored three runs. Erika PolidoriShannon Cleveland and Galloway each recorded a pair of base hits in the nightcap for Oakland (5-11-1).

Polidori led the top of the eighth inning with a triple and two batters later Galloway drove in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly to the shortstop. OU would increase the lead to 9-7 as Richardson drove in Whitney Weston with a line drive to the left fielder. Braunreuther (1-0) earned her first win of the season as she threw 2.2 scoreless innings in relief, allowing only two runners on base.

Oakland sent the game to extra innings in the seventh inning as they scored two runs on an RBI double by Richardson to score Weston and Kisman singled to center field to plate Galloway.

The Golden Grizzlies scored three runs in the first two innings as Galloway hit an RBI-single to center field in the opening inning and Polidori doubled to score two runs in the second inning. OU would add one run each in the fourth and fifth innings as Chelsea Carena and Cleveland each had RBI singles.

Laura Pond started the game and threw 5.1 innings, giving up seven runs, only two earned, on nine hits and struck out three batters.

In game one, the Golden Grizzlies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning as they capitalized on three Toledo errors as Kisman and Sarah Hartley both scored on an error by the shortstop.

Erin Kownacki started the game throwing 5.0 shut out innings until she gave up six runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth inning, led by a 2-RBI single by Kristen Roznoski. Kownacki (4-6) suffered the loss throwing 5.2 innings and struck out seven batters.

“We won every inning in the first game but the last one,” added Miner. “It was very difficult for the team to let that game get away from us. Erin dominated that game until the sixth inning where we let them get back in the game with a coupe errors and then some hard hit balls.”

The Golden Grizzlies will head to Brookings S.D. this weekend as they face South Dakota State in a three-game Summit League series beginning on Friday at 3 p.m. ET at the Jackrabbit Softball Stadium.
