FOOTBALL: Athens gains first win by downing Pontiac
TROY — After two weeks of being punished on the gridiron, Troy Athens had its change to deliver some pain Friday and the Red Hawks delivered.
Athens captured their first football win of the season Friday, posting a 23-12 OAA Red Division victory over visiting Pontiac.
Pontiac (0-3, 0-2) led 6-3 after the end of the first quarter, only to see Athens scored 23 straight points to take control.
Jake Nelson’s 7-yard run with six seconds left in the second quarter put the Red Hawks up for good.
Devin Terry added a 1-yard TD run and Derick Nelson put the game out of reach with 5:31 left with a 31-yard touchdown scamper. Bryan Lawson hit two extra points for Athens.
Tyler Gasko nailed a 41-yard field goal to put Athens up 3-0 early in the first quarter.
Pontiac’s Jantoine Antwine’s 2-yard run with 6:35 left in the first gave the Phoenix their short-lived 6-3 advantage. Antwine added a 1-yard plunge in the fourth quarter for Pontiac to cap the scoring.
Derick Nelson had six carries for 73 yards, Jake Nelson added 59 yards on 13 carries and Kyle Skinner picked up 45 yards on six rushes for Athens.
Brennan McHugh had 12 tackles and Luke Spinek added seven tackles and a sack for the Red Hawks.
Antwine had 77 yards on 14 carries and Jeff Nealy added 62 yards on 17 carries for Pontiac. Nealy finished 6-for-12 passing for 55 yards.
