FOOTBALL: Lake Orion erupts late in downing Troy
DETROIT — Lake Orion got a scare Saturday night.
Locked in a 17-17 tie with Troy in third quarter in an OAA Red Division contest at Ford Field in Detroit, The Dragons delivered a scary message of their own.
Corey Ester caught a 15-yard touchdown pass in the final seconds of the third quarter and also returned a punt for another score, as the Dragons scored 35 unanswered points over the final 13 minutes in recording a 52-17 victory over the Colts in the nightcap of the Gridiron Classic.
The win helped Lake Orion bounce back from a 36-7 thumping by Rochester Stoney Creek seven days earlier.
Easter also scored on a 53-yard run for the Dragons (4-1, 3-1).
Connor Grant added a 1-yard plunge, Logan Shadaia returned a fumble 18 yards for a score, Zak Arnold chipped in with a 66-yard TD sprint and Justin Pavliscak scored on a 10-yard run to aid the late-game blitz for the Dragons.
Charlie Khoury pounced on a loose ball in the end zone to account for Lake Orion’s early 7-0 advantage.
Jake Meissner booted a 32-yard field goal for Troy (2-3, 2-2), while Lucas Bevilacua drilled a 36-yard field goal for Lake Orion, which led 10-3 at the half.
Easter’s 17-yard tpochdown run gave Lake Orion a 17-3 lead, only to see Troy claw back when Nick Braldey fired a 50-yard TD pass to Devin Alexander and a 78-yard TD pass to Danny Wunderlich to knot the score at 17-17.
