ROCHESTER HILLS — It was far from a masterpiece or thing of beauty, but Rochester Adams can still add to its championship banner for girls basketball.
Adams, despite a 14-0 hole after the first quarter, turned the tables on rival Rochester Tuesday by outscoring the host Falcons 26-4 over the final three quarters en route to a 26-18 victory.
The win gave Adams at least a share of the OAA White Division title, the Highlanders’ 11th league title in a 22-season span. Adams also won six league titles from 1991-96, captured league crowns in 2000 and 2001, 2008 (winter) and 2014.
“It still is another year on the banner, even though this wasn’t the prettiest (of wins) to clinch,” admitted veteran Adams coach Fran Scislowicz. “How often can you go down 14-0 after the first quarter and come back and win? We never panicked. We just kept going after it. We held them to only four points over the last three quarters.”
Ivy Schultz scored eight points in an opening 14-0 run for Rochester. The Falcons nailed four 3-pointers in the first eight minutes of play only to drop off the face of the earth offensively during the final three quarters in one of their lowest outputs in school history.
Adams used an 8-2 run in the second quarter to close the gap down to 16-8 at the half. In the third quarter, the Highlanders ventured on a 10-0 run for an 18-16 advantage heading into the final frame.
Adams close with an 8-2 run to finish off the Falcons and gain a title share.
Amber Jamison scored nine points with 14 rebounds, hitting a pair of threes in the fourth quarter after converting on only one triple the whole season. Ravien Owusu added seven points for Adams.
“That’s the ironic thing about this is that a night when shots weren’t really falling, our center comes out and hits two threes in the second half that helped us pull away, “ said Scislowicz.
“Our defense was great in the final three quarters,” added Scislowicz. “As much as we struggled on offense, we stepped it up on defense and held them to just 18 points. I think years later, people won’t remember how we clinched the league. They’ll be able to look up at the banner and see that we were league champions.”
