GIRLS SOCCER: Waterford Lakes edges Clarkston Everest for district title
BURTON — A year ago the unified girls soccer team of Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes and Clarkston Everest Collegiate made a run to the Division 4 state finals.
This school year the two neighboring Catholic high schools ended their cooperative agreement in multiple sports, forcing the two into separate programs.
It was fitting that the two newly created rivals met on the soccer pitch Saturday for a district championship. In the end, Waterford Our Lady emerged with a 2-1 victory over the Mountaineers in a game played at Burton Genesee Christian.
Alex Troy scored off a Rachelle Topolewski cornerkick in the second minute.
Katie Cross tied the contest in the 70th minute for Everest Collegiate.
The Moutaineers’ momentum was quickly reversed, as Allison Maiorana tallied the game-winner in the 72nd minute.
Karli Flesher made it stand law with several saves down the stretch to preserve the win.
Our Lady of the Lakes will face Harbor Beach at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the regional semifinals at Saginaw Valley Lutheran.
