MOUNT PLEASANT — Sometimes certain teams do not match up well with others.

Such the case for Oxford.

The fourth-seeded Wildcats ran into a buzz saw Saturday morning against top-seeded Hartland in the Division 1 state semifinals, falling into a quick 30-6 hole and eventually succumbing by a 42-19 count at Central Michigan University’s McGuirk Arena.

Hartland (33-1), which faced No. 2 Davison in the finals, grabbed two pins and a technical fall in the first three bouts for a commanding 17-0 advantage.

Oxford (24-9) could never recover. The Wildcats only won four of the 14 matches and never threatened.

“To be where we are, after all of the adversity we’ve had to face this season, I am pleased with how far this team came,” said Oxford coach Paul McDevitt. “We wrestled hard and still got to the semifinals. We are proud of that. Hartland is very good and we needed some close matches to go our way to have a chance. We battled but came up short.”

Oxford reached the state tournament for the 10th time in 18 seasons and advanced to its seventh Final Four overall. The Wildcats graduate only three seniors that were regulars in the starting lineup.
