COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Golden Grizzlies takes series from IUPUI

ROCHESTER HILLS — Erin Galloway had four hits on the day and scored all three of Oakland’s runs in the second game and Brittany Doyle threw a complete game to earn the victory as Oakland split a Summit League doubleheader with IUPUI , 3-1 and 2-10, at the OU Softball Field Saturday afternoon.

“This was a good win after losing the first game,” said head coach LaDonia Hughes“We fought hard in the second game to win our second straight Summit League series and that is the fight we need as we head towards the end of the season.”

In the second game, Doyle threw 7.0 innings, giving up one earned run on only three hits, striking out six batters.  IUPUI’s Samantha Bumbaugh (0-3) suffered the loss, throwing 2.0 innings, giving up two earned runs and struck out one batter.

Oakland (8-33, 5-16) got on the board in the first inning as Morgan Muron drove in Galloway with an RBI-single up the middle.  IUPUI tied the game in the second inning as Lindsey Richard singled to third base, scoring Jenny Royse.

The Golden Grizzlies answered in the third inning as Galloway led off with a double to center field and would later score on a wild pitch.  Oakland added one more run in the fifth inning as Shelby Gott stole second base, allowing Galloway to score from third base.

The win marked the second straight Summit League series win for the Golden Girzzlies.

In the first game, The Jaguars scored first in the second inning, as a fielding error by the left fielder allowed Royse to score then Audrian Basquez stole second base, allowing Leah Prewitt to score for a 2-0 advantage.  Oakland answered in the third inning as Galloway and Leah DiCristofaro hit back-to-back RBI singles to tie the game at 2-2.

IUPUI would score eight runs in the fourth inning, led by a two-RBI double by Prewitt and a 2-RBI single by Richards, for the final score of 10-2.

Abbie Richardson (3-9) suffered the loss, throwing 3.1 innings, giving up seven runs, five earned and striking out a batter.  IUPUI’s Nikki Thomas (7-14) earned the win, throwing a complete game, giving up two earned runs and striking out six batters.

IUPUI slipped to 15-30 overall and 6-12 in conference play.

OAKLAND 4, IUPUI 3:  Abbie Richardson had two hits, including a three-run double, Jackie Kisman added a pair of hits and Leah DiCristofaro drove in a run as the Oakland softball team (7-32, 4-15) earned a come from behind victory over IUPUI (14-29, 5-11), 4-3, in the opening game of a Summit League series at the OU Softball Field on Friday.  Game two of the doubleheader was postponed in the first inning due to weather.

“We finally executed with bases loaded with two outs and it was amazing,” said head coach LaDonia Hughes.  “Our team is showing a bit of life at the end of the season and it’s great to see.  I look forward to doubled intensity tomorrow to close out the series.”

IUPUI grabbed the early lead scoring on a RBI-single by Lindsey Richards in the second inning and a successful squeeze bunt by Eryn Dillon in the third inning.  Oakland answered with four runs in the third inning as DiCristofaro singled to score Colleen Zimmerman from third base.  With the bases loaded, Richardson cleared the bases with a double to right field to take a 4-2 lead.

The Jaguars would add one run in the fifth inning as Jocelyn Oppenhuis drew a bases-loaded walk but hit into a double play to end the threat as Oakland won 4-3.

Brittany Doyle (4-14) earned the win, throwing a complete game, giving up three earned runs on nine hits and struck out eight batters.  IUPUI’s Oppenhuis (5-12) suffered the loss, throwing 5.0 innings, giving up four earned runs, on six hits and struck out four batters.

The second game of the doubleheader will be continued tomorrow starting at noon followed by the final game of the three-game series at the OU Softball Field.
