2012 ALL-NORTH OAKLAND AREA GIRLS BASKETBALL: Queens of the court have all the assets

It was another banner year for girls basketball in the NorthOaklandSports.com coverage area this winter.

Did we say banner year?

Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes captured its third straight MHSAA Class D state championship and with a bevy of college prospects, had a team with Class A talent on the hardwood this season.

That was only just the beginning.

Rochester Hills Christian reached the title game of the Michigan Association of Christian Schools Division I state tournament and finished as the state runner-up, while league rival Clarkston Springfield Christian reached the MACS Division II championship game for schools with less than 50 high school students.

In the MHSAA tournament, Rochester Stoney Creek finally won its first-ever district championship in Class A in the Cougars’ 10^th season, while Clarkston repeated as a district champion as well.

There were several other story lines for teams in 2012, as once proud Auburn Hills Oakland Christian brought back its program after a one-year hiatus, while teams such as Rochester and Lake Orion overcame adversity to finish strong. Rochester Adams showcased some young talent which could make them relevant again in the near future, while Auburn Hills Avondale was the OAA Red Division and district runner-up and once again proved to be one of the area’s premier teams.

Clarkston, Rochester Adams, Rochester Hills Christian and Waterford Our Lady all captured conference titles this season.

As for individual talent, there were several area players that have landed on the radar of college coaches from various schools. In fact, there were four Division I-bound players that head up the 2012 All-North Oakland Area Girls Basketball Team.

The squad, selected by NOS staff in conjunction with area coaches’ opinions, is broken down into five teams with five players each. The talent pool is deep.

Paula Bronsing of Rochester Hills Christian is Coach of the Year after turning a dormant program into a small-school power in just four short seasons.

Below are the profiles of all of the members of the first five teams plus Coach of the Year:

FIRST TEAM

HANNAH LITTLE, Auburn Hills Avondale 6-0 sr. F/C: Headed for Division I St. Bonaventure University, this three-year starter was one of the top post players in Oakland County, earning All-State accolades in Class A and All-OAA Red Division and All-County honors as well. A fine defensive player in her own right, Little average 17.2 points, 10 rebounds and 3.8 assists a game for a team that finished second in the OAA-Red and reached the district finals.

SINCLAIR RUSSELL, Troy Athens 6-1 sr. C: Russell’s team suffered through a major rebuilding year and team’s put together game plans to isolate and defend the talented Russell, who was a three-year starter and four-year varsity performer. This past season the three-time all-league selection still averaged 19.1 points, 13.1 rebounds, 5.2 steals and nearly six blocks a game (5.8), a single-season school record. She finished with 1,155 points, 48 double-doubles and is the school’s all-time leader in blocks. Russell signed with Division I Oakland University.
GABBY YURIK, Rochester Stoney Creek 5-6 sr. SG: Named Miss Golf and a four-time all-stater in that sport, leading her team to back-to-back state runner-up finishes in Division 1 in that sport, Yurik is the ultimate competitor. On the basketball court, she recorded 11 school records in her four-year career. She finished with 1,459 points for a team that finally won its first district title and reached the Class A Sweet 16 this season. She averaged 18.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 3.0 steals and canned 72 three-pointers this season. Named All-OAA red Division, All-County, All-Metro North and All-State First Team Class A, her school records include points in a game (42), career points (1,459), three-pointers in a game (9), season (72) and career (234), assists in a game (11), season (130) and career (414), and field goals in a game (13), season (139) and career (472). She will play golf for Michigan State.

“Gabby had an amazing senior year,” said coach Brad Crighton “Not only was she named Miss Golf but she led Stoney Creek to its first regional final. Gabby made 72 three pointers this season and has 234 for her career. That ranks fifth in state history.  She holds 11 school records and was able to accomplish all of this while maintaining a GPA of 3.91.”

LAUREN MOSS, Troy 5-5 sr. PG: Quick and athletic, Moss was more valuable to the Colts’ success beyond her stats. The two-time All-OAA Red Division pick, Moss averaged 10.5 points, 4.2 assists and three steals a game, but it was her presence on the court and her ability to move in transition or cause havoc on the defensive end that allowed her to thrive. She is head to Division I University of Buffalo to continue her career.

“Karin is a tremendous athlete,” said coach Dennis Koch. “She played nearly 32 minutes per game for the Colts this season. She played great defense, handled the ball well, and was able to lead Troy in scoring, assists and steals.”

AVA DOETSCH, Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes 5-7 jr. G: One of four All-State players in a Lakers’ uniform, Doetsch was money on the basketball court. Also an All-State First Team soccer player last year, Doetsch averaged 9.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.2 steals. She shot 78.6percent from the foul line, shot 52 percent from the floor and 24.3percent from the three-point range. Beyond that, she is a pesky defender and fine floor leader, often spearheading the Lakers’ transition game. She was a key contributor on all three of the team’s Class D state championship teams. Doetsch has already committed to the University of Nebraska-Omaha for soccer with one school year to go.

“Ava’s stats don’t tell her story,” said coach Steve Robak. “Ava is our best on ball defender. In fact, I would say one of the best defenders in Oakland County. She has done a great job of taking on the defensive challenge of guarding the opposing teams best player or ball handler. She is a great athlete and competitor and she is a three-year starter with two state championships as well. In the open floor she is not guardable because of her tremendous speed. On many occasions this year, she has made the coaching staff shake their head with some of the unbelievable things she can do on the court.”

SECOND TEAM

LAUREN BOYLE, Rochester Adams 5-5 sr. PG: A member on the Highlanders’ varsity since midway through her freshman year, Boyle overcame knee injuries to have a fine season and career for Adams. Leading a young team to the OAA White Division championship this season, Boyle meant more to her team than her stats. He averaged 8.0 points, 4.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds and shot 78 percent from the foul line. Boyle, who also plays soccer, earned All-OAA White Division and Team MVP honors this season.

“Lauren was the glue to hold us together to reach our goal of becoming the league champ,” said coach Fran Scislowicz. “She was not fancy, just very effective.”

MARISSA SECONTINE, Lake Orion 5-9 sr. F: Lake Orion was decimated by injuries this season, which makes Secontine’s performance more noteworthy. The Dragons’ still finished 14-7 with Secontine earned All-OAA White Division honors. She averaged 12.8 points and 7.9 rebounds while shooting 44 percent from the floor, 42 percent from three-point range, and 69 percent from the free throw line. She has signed with Sienna Heights.

CARLEE COTTRELL, Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes 5-9 sr. PG: A 1.5-year starter after transferring over from Auburn Hills Oakland Christian, Cottrell is fundamentally sound player who has played on two state championship squads.  This season she fit the mold as part of WOLL’s balanced attack, averaging 11.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.3assists and 1.6 steals a contest. She made 59 percent of her free throws and 48 percent of her field goal attempts. The All-State First Team Class D honoree also earned All-Catholic and All-County Second Team. She has signed with Indiana Wesleyan. She scored more than 1,000 career points between her two schools.

“Carlee had a really very good year,” said coach Robak. “She has led our team in assists and she sees open players that most players wouldn’t see. She has defended most teams post player, which has left her undersized, but has done a very good job. She moves well without the ball and has good basketball IQ.”

DELANEY KENNY, Clarkston 5-9 jr. PG: While her older sister Kaleigh is playing at Division II Findlay University in Ohio, Delaney Kenny is making a name for herself. The All-OAA Red Division selection finished with 10.9 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.9 steals a game as one of the Wolves’ floor leaders. She also shot 47.6percent from the floor and 63.2 percent from the foul line. Kenny also earned Associated Press All-State Honorable Mention Class A and was Team Co-MVP Offense.

“Delaney is a 3-year starting guard and captain of our team,” said coach Tim Wasilk. “She led us in scoring, assists, two-point shots made, two-point field goal percentage and free throws made. Delaney is very fast in the open floor and gets to the basket extremely well. She is a good finisher around the basket, and a good shooter off the pass and dribble. Delaney anticipates the passing lanes very well on the defensive end of the floor. She is a very good passer, sees the floor well, and creates for others. She can play inside and outside and is a very good rebounder. Last summer Delaney was named to the BCAM’s Best Team as a sophomore.”

MEGAN HASTINGS, Clarkston 5-5 sr. SG: A four-year varsity player, Hastings helped Clarkston climb from the cellar of the OAA Red Division to being a top-20 team in Class A each of the past two seasons. This season Clarkston won league and district titles behind the play of Hastings, who was one of the Wolves’ team leaders. She averaged 9.5 points, 2.2 rebounds, 2.1 steals, and 1.0 assists an outing while shooting at a .360 clip from three-point range. She earned All-OAA Red Division and All-County Honorable Mention honors along with being named Team Team Co-MVP Offense by her peers.

“Megan is a four-year starting guard and a three-year captain,” said Wasilk. “She led us in three-point shots made, as well as three-point shooting percentage. She made 1.6 three-point shots per game. Megan also led our team in steals. Megan is a very good defensive player and anticipates the passing lanes very well. She is very poised while playing the point guard position. She handles the ball extremely well in the open court. Megan is a very good passer, sees the floor well, and creates for others. She has tremendous mental toughness. Last season, Megan was named to the BCAM’s Best Team as a junior. She was named all-league as a junior and senior. Megan was also named our team Co-MVP Offense for the 2011 and 2012 seasons.”

THIRD TEAM

TORI DUFFEY, Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes 5-7 sr. G/F: A transfer from Walled Lake Central, Duffey made an impact in her only season with the Lakers. An All-State First Team honoree, Duffey will play next season at Division I University of New Hampshire. She contributed 11.3 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 2.2 steals an outing while she shot 69.5 percent from the foul line, 38 percent from the floor and 28.8 from three-point range.

“Tori has done a great job this season and she has improved greatly from the beginning of the year, when she was new to our system,” said Coach Robak. “She is a very hard worker, in practice and games, which is a great attribute in a player. She has done a good job of seamlessly fitting into the team and has been an important part of the team success this year.”

ALLISE DUBAY, Rochester Hills Christian 5-2 sr. PG: In her four years as a starter, Dubay earned All-FBAC Red Division First Team honors each time. A standout three-sport athlete, Dubay also earned All-State First Team Division I honors by the Michigan Association of Christian Schools this season. She is the school’s all-time leader in steals and assists for a single game, season and career. She also finished with around 13 points and game this season and helped her team to the state runner-up trophy in MACS-I after leading her team to season the state semifinals last year.

QUINECE GARRISON, Auburn Hills Avondale 5-5 jr.G: A lighting quick guard, Garrison moved into the Yellowjackets’ starting lineup this season and finished second on the team in scoring. She earned All-OAA Red Division honors for her efforts.

ANNA MANILLA, Clarkston 5-10 sr. F: An All-State high jumper in track and field, Manilla did the dirty work for the Wolves with little fanfare. A defensive stopper and fine rebounder, Manilla averaged 4.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 1.0 assists an outing. She was named All-OAA Red Division and Team MVP Defense.

“Anna is a four-year varsity player, three-year starter and three-year captain,” said Wasilk. “Anna does all the things that make a team successful. She is our vocal leader and plays extremely smart on the floor. She has tremendous mental toughness. Anna is a tremendous defensive player both on and off the ball and anticipates the passing lanes very well. Anna is our defensive stopper and always guarded the opponent’s best offensive perimeter scorer. Anna is aggressive and has a tremendous work ethic. She is a very good rebounder and was second on our team in rebounding.”

LEXIE ROBAK, Waterford Our Lady of Lakes 5-9 jr. F: A year ago Robak’s older sister Lauren Robak was Class D All-State First Team the younger Robak followed in those same shoes as she was one of four Lakers to earn such honors this season. This season the sharp-shooting Robak made 30.9 percent of her three-pointers along with 78.2 percent of her free throws and 57 percent of her field goal attempts. She finished with 11.7 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.6assiosts and 2.5 steals d 1.1 blocks a game as part of Our Lady’s well-balanced offensive and defensive machine.  She is a three-year starter on all three state championship teams.

“Lexie has had a great year and has been our most consistent player, game-in and game-out this season,” said coach Robak. “She is a smart player who does a great job of helping her teammates get to the right spots on the floor. She’s made some very big shots for us this season and has been playing her best basketball lately. She’s a pure shooter and also our second leading rebounder and leading shot blocker. She gets the job done without much fanfare which is why she is so valuable to our team.”

FOURTH TEAM

KIM LEPOR, Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest 5-5 sr. PG: Lepor moved into starting lineup as a freshman and maintained her spot as one of the Crusaders’ top players in her four-year career. She led Northwest in scoring this season and earned All-MIAC Blue Division Second Team honors

ANNE TUCKER, Rochester 5-11 jr. F: A small-school transfer from Texas, where she earned All-State honors as a sophomore, it took Tucker a while to adjust to playing in a large-school league.by the end of the season, she was one of the Falcons’ go-to players. Her numbers picked up the season half of the season, which saw her post 9.2 points and 4.2 rebounds a game to earn All-OAA White Division honors. More importantly, she helped Rochester win six of the their final seven games an reach the Class A district finals.”

“She is both a Rochester Community Schools and OAA scholar-athlete,” said coach Adam Sheldon. “Anne was our best post player and top inside option on offense. She can step back and shoot and did a great job rebounding. Anne had two 20-plus-point games this season.”

SHELBY DAVIS, Oxford 5-10 jr. G/F: Oxford had the area’s best turnaround in 2012 after just three wins a year ago and Davis a sparkplug to that motor. This season the three-year starter and two-year captain averaged a team best 11 points and eight rebounds a game an md earned All-OAA White Division status. With a 3.98 GPA, the Wildcats’ Team MVP is also an OAA Scholar Athlete.

“Shelby is our leader on the floor, highly respected by all players and always plays with intensity for her own development and for the development of the team,” said coach Stephen Emert. “She has a unique understanding of the game of basketball. She has good ball handling skills and is a very good shooter from any range. She has made a commitment to integrity and a commitment to pride in every aspect of her life.”

ALLYSSA COPLEY, Holly 6-1 soph. F/C: Copley improved leaps and bounds on her post game to earn All-Flint Metro League First Team honors for a team that finished second in the league at 13-3, and 15-6 overall. At times a dominating player in the paint, Copley led Holly to back-to-back 15-win seasons after averaging 12.9 points, 9.8 rebounds, 3.5steals and 1.2 assists a game.

“Allyssa continues to grow as a young athlete,” said coach David Hall. “She is a team player who will pass to teammates or get a key basket.  In school she is a 3.8 student. If Allyssa continues to improve she will be able to college basketball at the Division I level.”

LAUREN VOSS, Rochester Stoney Creek 5-11 Soph. F: The Cougars were much improved in the posts this season an d the talented Voss was one fo the reasons why. She finished in the top three on the team in scoring rebounding and blocked shots and earned All-OAA Red Division status for her efforts in her second varsity season.

FIFTH TEAM

SYDNEY HEATH, Troy 5-11 soph. F: An athletic, versatile player, Heath was effective on both ends of the floor. She has the ability to rebound and block shots in the paint and get up the floor in a flash as part of the Colts’ transition game. She is also a state qualifier in the hurdles and sprint relays for Troy’s track team as a freshman.

AMANDA MILLER, Pontiac 5-7 jr. G: This All-OAA Red Division standout led the Phoenix in scoring in 2012.

KIAYA BOWMAN-ALLEN, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep 5-5 sr. SG: A steady hand during her four-year career at Notre Dame Prep, Bowman-Allen finished up with All-Catholic honors as a senior. As a senior, she averaged 10 points, two rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block an outing for a young team that ventured through a rebuilding campaign at 11-11.

“Kiaya is an outstanding offensive threat,” said coach Pat Battani. “She can take the ball to the basket or hit three-pointers. She is a very quick guard who gets out and on the fast break well and finishes well in transition.”

KATELYN HENDERSHOTT, Ortonville Brandon 5-9 fr. G: While the young Blackhawks suffered through a rebuilding campaign, Hendershott still had a fine debut season .An All-Flint Metro League Second Team honoree, she was sixth in the nine-school league in scoring (10.9 points) and second in rebounding (8.5 in league games, 8.1 overall)while swiping 1.9 passes a game. Her best game was 28 points and 11 rebounds against Lapeer West. She shot 48 percent from the floor and 70 percent from the foul line

“Katelyn is an outstanding leader on and off the floor for our team and is capable of playing all five positions on the floor,” said coach Andrew Teberian. “She guarded the opposing teams best player. Flint Metro teams took notice of her after the Lapeer West game and based their defensive strategy on stopping her. She made the transition from playing 4/5 on her AAU team to 2/3 for us this season. She is currently playing AAU with the Michigan Mystics and is also an excellent softball player and student.”

BREANNE WATTERWORTH, Lake Orion Baptist 6-2 soph. C: After missing the second half of her freshman season, Watterworth bounced back as a sophomore and emerged as one of the area’s most dominating post players. The younger sister of current Oakland University standout Bethany Watterworth and Lake Orion High senior Brad Watterworth. She led the Lions in points, rebounds and blocked shots this season and made regional headlines when she recorded a game with 51 points, 34 rebounds and eight blocks in an upset victory over Midland Calvary Baptist. She already has the school’s leader for blocks in a game, season and career.

COACH OF THE YEAR

PAULA BRONSING, Rochester Hills Christian: Five years ago Bronsing was coaching the junior team at her alma mater and watched as the school’s varsity couldn’t win a game. She took over in 200809 and has watched her program do a complete 180 on the court.

The Eagles, have won back-to-back conference titles in the Fundamental Baptist Athletic conference Red Division for the first time in school history and their only other league title came back in 199-200 when Bronsing was a player at the school.

In the MACS Division I state tournament, the Eagles were the No. 1 seed in 2011 and reached the Final Four for the first time with four seniors starters and eight total seniors. This season RHC had a roster full of freshmen and sophomores and matured quickly before making a run to the MACS state title game, where the Eagles fell late to top-ranked Carson City Fellowship Baptist.
