SKIING: Clarkston falls from top spot, finishes as state runner-up
Lake Orion boys claim fifth; Rochester Adams girls race sixth

BOYNE — After a year on top, Clarkston fell from grace Monday afternoon.
The defending Division 1 state champion Wolves finished second at Monday’s MHSAA boys skiing state finals on the slopes of Boyne Mountain, yielding the team title to longtime nemesis Marquette.
The Redmen scored 57 points to edge Clarkston’s 74 points. Traverse City Central was third with 95 points, while Traverse City West (127), Lake Orion (143), Okemos (237), South Lyon Unified (240), Grand Blanc (271) and Brighton (279) wrapped up the field in the boys meet.
In the girls meet, Traverse City Central collected 83 points to win the state title. Walled Lake Central was a close second with 92 points, the Vikings’ highest-ever finish, while Marquette (113), Birmingham Marian (116), Traverse City West (128), Rochester Adams (170), Fenton-Linden Unified (203), Walled Lake Northern (273), and Brighton (283) rounded out the nine-school field in the boys meet
In the girls giant slalom, Walled Lake Central’s Mallory Slicker posted a two-run time of 1:02.81 to win the gold medal. Traverse City Central’s Shannon Weaver was second (1:03.31), while Kalamazoo Hackett’s Abigail Ellis (1:03.88), Marquette’s Whitney Stilwell (1:04.04) and Traverse City West’s Morgan Culp (1:04.51) rounded out the top five.
As for NorthOaklandSports finishers, Rochester Adams’ Laura Postlmayr was 18th, Natalie Lumsden (20th) and Lauren Henry (24th) led the way for the Highlanders. Rochester’s Natalie Krauss (28th) and Clarkston’s Caroline Holsbeke (33rd) also finished in the top 50.
Over in the slalom, Traverse City West’s Monica Hessler was crowned champion with a 1:05.69 effort. Traverse City Central’s Weaver was second (1:05.77), while White Lake Lakeland’s Kelsey Griffin (1:06.84), Walled Lake Central’s Slicker (1:09.03) Marquette Hanna Johnson (1:09.89) all finished in the top five.
Adams’ Henry led local competitors by placing 10th (1:13.56). Postlmayr (21st), Lumsden (24th) and Shelby Rosalik (34th) also cracked the top 50 for Adams.
In the boys GS, Lakeland’s Taylor Janssen won the title in1:00.16, just ahead of Clarkston’s Derek VanItallie (1:00.49). Lake Orion’s Logan Stetsko was third (1:00.50), while the Marquette trio of Luke Johnson (1:00.55), Nick Weber (1:00.61) and Matt Anderson (1:00.61) took the next three slots to lead the Redmen to the state championship.
Clarkston’s Ryan Callahan also finished in the top 10 by earning a 10th-place finish (1:00.88). Teammates Alex McIntosh (18th) and Lance Holsbeke (22nd) aided the Wolves’ runner-up effort.
Lake Orion’s Logan Stetsko (31st), Holly-Oxford Unified Lars Joergens-Koka (36th), Lake Orion’s Justin Pavlisak (38th) and Gregory Thelen (39th) and Clarkston’s Ben Schuster (43rd) all cracked the top 50.
The slalom saw Traverse City West’s win the individual crown in1:04.29. Walled Lake Northern’s John Merchant was second (1:04.32), with Clarkston’s Ryan Callahan third (1:05.34), Lakeland’s Janssen (1:06.05) and Birmingham Brother Rice’s Robbie Cort fifth (1:06.58).
Clarkston’s VanItallie claimed sixth (1:06.81) and McIntosh raced eighth (1:07.79)for the Wolves.
Lake Orion’s Dalton Stetsko finished 12th, while teammate Justin Klaus was 16th and Logan Stetsko 22nd for the Dragons.
Clarkston’s Reis Wiedmann finished 26th, while Holly’s Joergens-Koka (27th), Lake Orion’s Nicholas Klaus (34th), Clarkston’s Holsbeke (37th) and Rochester Adams’ Alex McLaren (41st) all had strong finishes to lead the local contingent.
