ROCHESTER — With the heat index over 100 degrees last Tuesday, all of the cross country jamborees in the Oakland Activities Association were pushed back a week.
In the OAA Red Division, even the week delay,it didn’t change the inevitable: Lake Orion and Birmingham Seaholm still have a stranglehold on the league.
The Dragons boys, who have won six of the last seven league titles, collected 56 points Tuesday at Bloomer Park, even without senior David Diaz and sophomore Andrew Lorant leading its pack. Both were on the injured reserve and unable to race.
Birmingham Seaholm’s girls ran away with the meet with 22 points.
“I was a little concerned, especially not having our full lineup. Andrew Lorant has been our No. 2 and running great, but was not able to race,” said veteran Lake Orion boys coach Stan Ford. “David Diaz, we hope to get him back in a few weeks. But I like our pack. We had a lot of guys that were (1 minute, 15 seconds) apart run good races.”
Birmingham Seaholm was second with 57 points in the boys meet, while Oxford (79), Rochester (95), Rochester Adams (115), Clarkston (144) and Troy (170) followed suit.
Seaholm the defending Division 1 state champion, won the girls meet with an eye-catching 22 points, one of the lowest team scores in league history, boys or girls. Rochester was a solid second with 50 points, with Oxford (93), Lake Orion (104), Clarkston (132), Troy (134) and Rochester Adams (194) rounding out the team scores.
Seaholm junior Audrey Belf has taken the baton of standout female distance runners to hail from the OAA and won the meet with a blistering 17:46. She was over a minute ahead of Rochester senior Jessica Goethals, another All-State runner.
Seaholm’s Marissa Dobry (18:52.5) and Rachel Dadamio (18:52.9), Troy’s Abbey Green (19:00), Seaholm’s Julia Demko (19:21), Rochester’s Amanda Lewis (19:26), Seaholm’s Patty Giradot (19:32), and Rochester’s Lauren Kaliszewski (19:39) and Allison Skelcy (19:41) rounded out the top 10.
The Maples sent five finishers into the top eight and nine in the top 25 to win by 28 points and send of message that they will again be one of the state’s best.
Even shorthanded, Lake Orion’s boys still had five finishers in the top 18, while Seaholm had five in the top 21 in the closely-contested meet.
“We don’t have the one frontrunner, like we had TJ Carey that past four years, but we have a lot of kids, a lot of young runners, that are packing up. It was enough to beat Seaholm this time,” said Ford. “We hope we can get everybody back for the next jamboree or at least the county meet.”
Troy’s Kunal Tangri clocked 16:31 to break the tape in the boys meet. Lake Orion’s Kirk Hansen was a close second (16:32), followed by Rochester’s James Schuler (16:35), Seaholm’s Ross Bernard (16:56), Clarkston’s Grant Henley (16:56), Oxford’s Logan Bruni (16:58), Seaholm’s Alex Skender (16:58) and Stephen Young (16:59), Lake Orion’s Zac Seilkop (16:59) and Adams’ Matt Schram (17:00).
Jacob Ernatt (13th), Matthew Arenz (14th) and Jonah Forystek (18th) aided Lake Orion’s cause.
