FOOTBALL: Genrich’s FG lifts West Bloomfield past Athens
WEST BLOOMFIELD — Connor Genrich played the hero’s roll Friday night.
Genrich connected on a 39-yard field goal with 59.4 seconds left in rallying West Bloomfield past Troy Athens, 32-29, in OAA Red Division play.
Ehron Enyedy scored on a 22-yard interception return for Athens (1-4, 1-3), only to see West Bloomfield score three straight touchdowns in the first quarter — Austin James caught a 18-yard pass from Robert Powell, Michael King scored on a 62-yard punt return and Chris Watkins added a 54-yard touchdown scamper, as the Lakers took a 22-8 lead.
Alex Mussat brought Athens back to within 22-15 when he hit Lucas Bezzera on a 71-yard pass play, only to see King haul in a 17-yard strike from Powell to help West Bloomfield go up 29-15 with 1:54 left in the second quarter.
Bezzara scored 11 seconds before halftime for Athens, this time on a 38-yard heave from Mussat to pull the Red Hawks to within 29-22 at the half, then caught a 10-yard strike from Mussat to draw the game even at 29-29 late in the third quarter.
Neither team scored again until Genrich’s game-winning boot.
King finished with 113 rushing yards on 14 carries for West Bloomfield (2-3, 1-3). Watkins added 65 yards on seven carries, Powell was 14-for-31 passing for 145 yards, while King had five catches for 57 yards for the Lakers. King had 316 all-purpose yards, including 145 return yards, for West Bloomfield.
Troy Majette and JJ Bloom had six tackles each for the Lakers.
Bezzera finished with 157 yards on six catches, while Mussat finished 9-for-23 for 182 passing yards for Athens. Derrick Nelson added 45 rushing yards on 11 carries for the Red Hawks.
Craig Bazin and Brennan McHugh each had nine tackles for Athens.
