FOOTBALL: Clarkston hangs on to thwart Oxford
CLARKSTON — Seemingly, every time Clarkston threw a punch Oxford’s way, the Wildcats returned the favor. Still, the second-ranked Wolves found enough to slip past Oxford in a Division 1 pre-district football game Friday.
Clarkston built a 17-7 lead in the second quarter and held on for a 30-27 victory over the Wildcats, who were playing their first season in Division 1.
The Wolves, who led 24-13 at the half, recovered Oxford’s failed onside-kick attempt with only 13 ticks remaining to seal the deal and enter next Friday’s district championship game at home against Romeo.
Oxford finishes 5-5 after playing a brutally-tough schedule. The Wildcats outscored Clarkston 14-6 in the second half.
Maskill scored on a 1-yardplunge to bring Oxford back to within 24-19 midway through the third quarter.
Clarkston had several penalties and a turnover which allowed Oxford to rally back to within three points on Wesley Maskill’s 2-yard run and Glacier Wallington’s two-point conversion.
Ian Eriksen finished with 22 carries for 196 yards and two touchdowns. Eriksen scored bookend touchdowns in the first half of 7 and 3 yards, respectively.
Caine Watlington had 16-yard run and Shane Hynes connected on a 26-yard field goal in the first half for Clarkston. Hynes made 3-of-4 extra points in the contest.
Wallington, who finished with 188 rushing yards and 49 passing yards, scored on runs of 9 and 26 yards in the first half and Aaron Johnston added an extra point to account for Oxford’s first-half points.
Centrus Williams Jr. answered with a 10-yard touchdown run for Clarkston that put the Wolves up 30-19. Clarkston also stopped Oxford inside the five under three minutes left in the game.
