ROCHESTER HILLS — Clarkston gained some long-awaited revenge on Oxford Friday evening.
The Wolves, who lost to Oxford in a dual match last month and have repeatedly finished behind the Wildcats in recent years at the league level, won the team title at the OAA Red Division league championships at Rochester Stoney Creek.
Clarkston rolled up an impressive 218.5 points at the six-school event, ahead of Oxford’s 188 points. Oxford (5-0 in duals) defeated Clarkston in the dual match, making this year’s overall team title a co-championship between the two North Oakland rival schools.
Oxford notched at least a share of its 10th straight league title, while Clarkston earned a share of the crown for the first time since 2007. Oxford has won or shared the overall crown (2011-2016 in the OAA and 2007-2010 in the FML) for a decade and has finished in the top three at a conference tournament 15 straight years.
Rochester (131), Rochester Adams (105.5), Rochester Stoney Creek (77) and Farmington (55) rounded out the team scores at the league tourney.
In the overall standings, Clarkston and Oxford both finished with 11 total points, while Rochester (8), Rochester Adams (6), Stoney Creek (4) and Farmington (2) followed suit.
Clarkston, which suffered through mass quantities of injuries last season, sent nine wrestlers into the finals and seven came away with seven league champions.
“That was big. A lot of these guys are those you didn’t think about last year,” said first-year Clarkston coach Fred Deramus. “It’s good for our program and we’re in the conversation again. We managed top keep everybody healthy and thinking positive. Last year we were young and had a (revolving door) of injuries. This year we are somewhat young but have most of our guys healthy.”
Mackenzie Hanselman (103), Houston Hemingsen (125), Alec Bills (140), Nate Vandermeer (160), Kyle Masters (171), Nate Hayes (189) and Nate Troutvine (285) all earned individual league titles for Clarkston.
“I thought we came to wrestle. We had nine guys reach the finals and seven won,” noted Deramus. “I thought we came to wrestle today.”
Oxford’s Dalton Meyers (112), Sergio Borg (130) and Alex Hrisopoulos (145) all claimed crowns to help Oxford claim second at the meet and keep its string of league championships in tact.
“I am happy that we shared another league crown, but not overall pleased with the way we wrestled today,” said longtime Oxford coach Paul McDevitt. “I thought some guys took the night off and Clarkston really took it to us.”
Stoney Creek notched a pair of champions, as Nate Hampton (119) and Aidan Pierobon (135) finished on top. Rochester’s Ryan Morgan (152) and Farmington’s Donovan King (215) also captured crowns.
