MOUNT PLEASANT —  On a day where there was a handful of upsets in the state quarterfinals round, Oxford made sure it was not a victim but a predator.

The fourth-seed Wildcats took a early 12-0 lead, fell behind briefly at 16-12, then rallied back for a 40-28 triumph Friday over fifth-seeded Hudsonville in the Division 1 state quarterfinals at Central Michigan University’s McGuirk Arena.

“There was some pressure. We were supposed to win, and some said the heavy favorites, so that made us coaches nervous,” said veteran Oxford coach Paul McDevitt. “We’ve had tons of injuries and without Wyatt (Harden) I didn’t know exactly what to expect. But our guys stepped up and competed and we were able to pull it out.”

Oxford already lost Adam Schlickenmeyer and Ryan Miller, a pair of individual state qualifiers last season, to early-season injuries, plus had two starters from last year elect to not come out for wrestling. Additionally, 215-pounder Wyatt Harden was held out due to an injury sustained in the individual regional finals six days earlier.

“There’s a lot of guys that we thought we could count on before the season started that are not here,” noted McDevitt. “That being said, we’ve had a lot of young guys step in and grow up. And we don’t lose much off this team. We only normally start three seniors.”

Oxford will face to-seeded Hartland in the state semifinals Saturday at McGuirk Arena. Second-seeded Davison will face No. 3 Novi Detroit Catholic Central in the other D-1 semifinal.

“They are tough,” admitted McDevitt. “When we wrestled them earlier in the season, we had a bunch of close matches against them. But Hartland won a bunch of them. We’ll have to win a couple of those matches and gain some bonus points in order to have a chance.”
