CLARKSTON — What has Clarkston done since graduating 19 players from its girls lacrosse team? Contend for a league championship.

The Wolves took a major step in that direction Tuesday by downing defending league champion Rochester, 13-11, in a key OAA White Division match.

Clarkston built a 9-3 lead at the half, then hung on for a two-goal triumph in handing Rochester its first league loss in two seasons.

“I am happy that we won this game, but not happy with how we finished,” said Stephanie Dellinger, Clarkston’s first-year head coach. “I wasn’t sure what to expect this season, losing 19 (players). But I think we have played well. We beat a team that beat us last season, that’s a good step.”

Danielle Dunn led Clarkston (4-0, 2-0) with four goals, while Lauren Sharkey, Stephanie Dellinger and Quinn Dabrowski added three goals apiece for the Wolves.

“I was little frustrated that we had a 9-3 lead at the half but allowed them to get back into the game,” said Coach Dellinger. “But I guess this is a good learning experience for us. We only have six seniors on the team and one of them never played lacrosse before. We also only have 17 girls on (varsity), so we don’t have the depth. But I think they are starting to come together. We have good group of girls that started playing together in middle school that are on this team and a core of them are scoring a lot of goals.”

Maggie Ng led the way for Rochester with five goals and one assist, giving her 24 goals on the year for the Falcons (4-2, 1-1). Rochester simply could not complete the comeback in dropping their first league game since 2009.

Emily Skubic and Katie Krako had two goals each, while Sam Blair and Rachel Bellestri added one goal each for the Falcons, who finished 3-0-1 in league play last season to win their first-ever conference title. The division has six teams this season with the addition of Rochester Adams.
