Oakland Christian advances to regional title game for 10th straight time

WATERFORD — After losing to Plymouth Christian in the regular season and surrendering the MIAC Blue Division crown to the Eagles, Priscilla Larned was asked the question by several of her players at Auburn Hills Oakland Christian: Will the Lancers get a second chance at Plymouth Christian?
Well, Oakland Christian earned that right by downing Sterling Heights Parkway Christian 25-15, 28-26, 25-16 on Tuesday in a Class D regional semifinal at Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes.
Plymouth Christian defeated Birmingham Roeper in the second semifinal to set up Thursday’s 7 p.m. regional final, also at Waterford Our Lady.
“We lost to Plymouth Christian in five games and I had a few of the girls ask me if we would ever play them again,” explained Larned, Oakland Christian’s veteran coach. “I told them ‘yes, but we had to get to the regional final and so did Plymouth Christian.’”
Oakland Christian will be making its 10th straight trip to the regional finals and going after its eighth regional crown in 10 years. Even with that track record, the Lancers (33-15-6) are the underdogs.
“We have five seniors, but we don’t have a lot of experience,” admitted Larned. “They have a lot of players who have been starters the past couple of years. They have a lot more players that have been around longer than our players.”
Darcy Johnston, the Lancers’ sole returning starter, led Oakland Christian with a match-high 22 kills. Taylor McKenna and Erin Washington led the team with assists and Olivia Schomer led the Lancers with digs.
“I am pleased with this team. Maybe it’s because we lost a lot from last season and we weren’t expected to do this well,” said Larned. “This team doesn’t give up. We’re not the most skilled team that I’ve had, but we are starting to come along.
“Is it possible that we can win (the regional)? Yes, but we’ll have to play a very good game. Plymouth Christian has a nice team with a lot of seniors,” said Larned. “I expect that it will be a very competitive game. They beat us in five games the last time, so we know that we can play with them.”
