DETROIT — Kevin Vacari scored a pair of touchdowns in the final 3:30 in leading Grand Rapids Catholic Central past Williamston 27-23 for the Division 4 football state championship at Ford Field.

It marked Catholic Central’s first state title in football since the Cougars claimed the 1987 Class B state championship trophy.

Williamston (12-2), which led 10-0 in the second quarter, built a 23-13 lead with 9:48 left in the fourth quarter when Dylan Schultz scored on a 39-yard run. Dylan Monette’s 6-yard scamper in the third quarter gave Williamston a 17-13 advantage.

The Hornets could not sustain that momentum, giving up the two late TDs to Catholic Central. Twice in the contest, Williamston had 10-point leads.

The Cougars got on the board with an Andre Cargill 29-yard field goal with 7:17 left in the second quarter and tied the game at 10-10 early in the third quarter on Bronson Hill’s 79-yard TD sprint. Cargill’s second field goal, this time form 24 yards out, put the Cougars (12-2) up 13-10 with 7:06 remaining in the third stanza.
