Five local standouts honored on All-State golf team

The Oakland Activities Association Red Division featured three teams that were ranked in the top 10 in the Division 1 girls golf polls all season, a trend in recent years as being one of the state’s premier conference for high school golf.
Rochester Stoney Creek, Rochester and Troy all finished up in the top-10 at the state finals, with Stoney Creek finishing an all-time best second, Troy was sixth and defending state champion Rochester eighth in the standings. Those three schools combined for multiple all-state accolades this season.
Rochester Stoney Creek had three all-state performers, while Rochester and Troy once apiece to lead golfers from the www.northoaklandsports.com coverage area on the all-state tally.
Stoney Creek’s Devon Compton, the Division 1 state medalist who was recently selected as Miss Golf 2010, heads up the All-State Super Team for the third straight season.
Also on the Super Team, a collection of the state’s top eight players as voted on by the Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association, is Stoney Creek junior Gabby Yurik, also a repeat member of the elite squad. Rochester’s Rosalie Shyu also made the Super Team after being on the All-State First Team last season.
The other player to make the Super Team cut were Grosse Ile senior Molly Esordi, Traverse City West senior Chelsea Guoynes, Otsego senior Brittany Haight, Holt senior Mariah Massa, and Plymouth sophomore Kelsey Murphy.
Two other area golfers all made the All-State First Team, both in Division 1. Marianna Stepp of Stoney Creek and Troy’s Kelly Feng made that 12-player list.
The www.northoaklandsports.com All-Area Team will be published in December, along with all of the other fall sports.
