Oakland’s Watterworth named Summit League Player of the Week

ELMHURST. Ill. – Sophomore Bethany Watterworth was named The Summit League Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday. A forward from Lake Orion, Mich. Watterworth averaged 22 points, five rebounds and five assists per game to lead the Golden Grizzlies to a 2-0 start to league play.

It is the first time that Watterworth has earned the award this season and third of her career. She was a perfect 9-for-9 from the field to lead OU past UMKC 75-50 and also hit a career-high three 3-pointers and blocked a career-high three shots against the Kangaroos, finishing with 21 points. In the season opener against Southern Utah, Watterworth scored 23 points and pulled in six rebounds.

For the week, Watterworth was 19-for-23 (82.6 percent) from the field and knocked five 3-pointers, shooting 83.3 percent from beyond the arc. She also reached double-figures by halftime in both games, something she has done in each game of the Golden Grizzlies’ current four-game win streak.

This season Watterworth is leading Oakland in scoring (18.5 ppg), rebounding (6.6 rpg) and assists (3.8 apg). She also ranks fifth in the NCAA in free-throw percentage having gone 26-of-27 (96.3 percent) at the line this season.

Watterworth and the Golden Grizzlies will battle the Fighting Illini of Illinois on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Athletics Center O’rena. It is the final game of a five-game home stand for OU.
