TUESDAY’S BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Troy downs Ferndale to move into first-place tie; Avondale drops Athens

FERNDALE — The race in the OAA White Division is about to get very interesting. With Troy’s 60-53 victory Tuesday, all of the nine schools in the league now have at least one loss.

Troy, Auburn Hills Avondale, Ferndale, Berkley and Rochester Adams all have one loss.

Sophomore forward James Young picked up a game-high 32 points, 11 rebounds and four steals to pace the Colts. Junior guard Evan Mahone added 14 points and senior guard John Stibich scored six but added a fine floor game for Troy (5-1, 3-1).

“I like the way we are playing right now,” said Troy coach Gary Fralick. “I’ll take our team. I think we’re a team that will be able to stay in this race. There are a lot of good team.

Troy led 15-11 after the first quarter and 28-021 at the break. The Colts used an 18-17 edge to grab a 46-38 advantage entering the fourth quarter. Ferndale (4-2, 3-1) could not overcome the deficit despite a 15-14 fourth-quarter.

“James Young just exploded again,” said Fralick. “He’s been like this at every game. I thought that their (Jordan) Guinn did a great job. He’s a player. I though he and James Young kind of went back and forth.”

Guinn scored 28 and Anthony Rice added nine points for Ferndale.

AUBURN HILLS AVONDALE 65, TROY ATHENS 56: Avondale remained in a first-place tie in the OAA White Division with this nine-point win Tuesday. Avondale led 12-6, only to see Athens go on a 26-18 surge in the second quarter to grab a 32-30 halftime lead. The Yellowjackets outscored Athens 35-30 in the second half, including 19-13 in the final quarter. Tony Harris scored 21, Ray Tillman added 19 points and AJ Susick scored eight for Avondale (5-1, 3-1). Jake Duzey scored 17 and Caleb McIntosh added 15 points for Athens (1-4, 0-3).

ALLEN PARK CABRINI 65, CLARKSTON EVEREST COLLEGIATE 50: Visiting Cabrini opened up Tuesday’s CHSL game with a 19-8 run and never looked back in picking up the 15-points win. By halftime, the lead was 33-21. Cabrini outscored the Mountaineers 32-28 in the second half. Trevor Hicks finished with 15 points and Greg Sombati added 14 points for Cabrini. Richie Cross finished with 22 points and Blake Beauchamp added 17 for Everest Collegiate.

BLOOMFIELD HILLS LAHSER 50, OXFORD 48: Lahser spoiled Oxford’s OAA Blue Division debut Tuesday with this two-point win. The Knights led 29-25 at the break, with Oxford holding a 23-21 edge in the second half. Martez Jones scored 17 and Armand Cartwright added 13 points for Lahser (2-5, 1-0). Mark Hazelwood nailed four 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 20 points for Oxford (2-3, 0-1). Tyler Rose and Chris Calvin added nine points apiece and Ken Coffman twined seven points for the Wildcats.

ROCHESTER 62, BLOOMFIELD HILLS ANDOVER 32: Rochester moved to 2-3 on the year with this 30-point blowout in the OAA Blue Division opener for both teams. Rochester bolted out to a 21-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and expanded that lead to 35-17 by the break to put the game away. Paris Pereira led a balanced attack with 14 points. Taylor Perry added 11 points, Kurt Apostol and Billy Klotz chipped in with eight points apiece and Nick Bradley and Sean McCann followed with six points each for the Falcons (2-3, 1-0). Mitchell Warner scored nine for Andover (2-4, 0-1), which was outscored 27-15 in the second half.

LAKE ORION 51, BIRMINGHAM SEAHOLM 40: Lake Orion earned its first OAA White Division win over the defending league champions Tuesday at home. The Dragons led 33-22 at the half and maintained the advantage in the second half. Jake Gardner scored 19 to lead Lake Orion, while Chaz Miller scored seven for the Dragons (1-3, 1-2), who were 21-for-27 from the foul line. Brandon Yosif led Seaholm (1-3, 1-3) with 11 points, while Shawn Conway was held scoreless by the Dragons’ defense.
